When your adrenaline stores run out, energy drinks replenish them quickly. Whether you’re cramming all night for a final exam or need a pick-me-up for that last leg of your road trip, energy drinks are a vital tool for giving you a second wind.
Many popular energy drinks use synthetic chemicals to deliver a strong kick. However, plenty of clean, organic options exist that draw energy from natural sources.
The saying “you are what you eat” isn’t lost on many companies as they produce healthy forms of fuel. Stimulants such as caffeine are readily available in nature from plants like coffee, tea leaves, and more.
Healthy energy drinks use natural ingredients and responsible sourcing to bring you a product that will benefit your health, the economies of developing agricultural nations, and the health of the planet.
Healthy Energy Drinks
The following list will give you various options for the best healthy energy drinks on the market today.
RUNA Energy Drinks
Runa is the Kichwa word for “fully alive,” which founders Tyler Gage and Dan MacCombie coopted to describe their line of healthy energy drinks sourced from the Amazon.
Gage and MacCombie discovered their key ingredient, a leaf known as guayusa, during a trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Indigenous tribes have utilized Guayusa as an important energy source for centuries, boiling the leaves to extract their high levels of polyphenols and L-Theanine, which provide higher levels of energy than coffee without the caffeine crash.
Runa sources guayusa using fair trade practices from organic farmers in Ecuador to combine with various natural fruit flavors in their diverse line of healthy energy drinks. My favorite flavor is the wild black cherry.
Zevia is a well-established beverage company committed to clean lifestyles and clean sourcing, with various zero-calorie and sugar-free teas and sodas.
They use a similar philosophy with their line of Zevia Energy drinks, which use a simple list of certified organic ingredients.
Zevia Energy drinks consist of six different flavors, all containing organic caffeine as the key energizer along with stevia leaf, organic sparkling water, and natural fruit and aromatic flavors.
The flavors are:
- Raspberry Lime
- Mango Ginger
- Strawberry Kiwi
- Pineapple coconut.
I loved the raspberry lime flavor. It reminded me of a summery limeade, and I could drink it guilt-free knowing it had no sugar or calories.
Bai Bubbles offers a wide variety of plant-based infusions, carbonated beverages, and caffeinated energy drinks inspired by the tropics.
Every flavor draws inspiration from tropical countries worldwide. All drinks have antioxidant infusions to boost your immunity along with your energy levels.
The Bai Boost drinks supply 110 mg of caffein extracted from white tea leaves. There are four Bai Boost Flavors, each named for the region that grows their fruity ingredients:
- Buka Black Raspberry
- Cartago Pineapple Passion Fruit
- Togo Tangerine Citrus
- Watamu Strawberry Watermelon
My favorite fruit is watermelon, so naturally, I opted for the Watamu Strawberry Watermelon.
The sweetness of the watermelon and subtle acidity from the strawberries meld beautifully.
EBOOST Super Fuel
Josh Taekman and John McDonald created EBoost Super Fuel in 2007 to provide active adults with a clean energy source that wouldn’t contaminate their bodies with toxic chemicals.
They’ve created a diverse line of energy drinks, pre-workout powders, and post-workout recovery infusions.
Their Super Fuel line provides natural energy from caffeine along with a package of 10 vitamins to keep your system balanced when the caffeine wears off.
EatThisNotThat voted EBOOST Super Fuel “The Best Energy Drink of 2021,” as they create a complete package of vitamins, electrolytes, antioxidants, and caffeine.
There are four flavors of Super Fuel, all of which are carbonated:
- Ginger Lime
- Orange Mango
- Strawberry Lemonade
- Blue Raspberry
The Strawberry Lemonade is their biggest seller, but I like the Orange Mango for its delightful sweetness.
Hiball Sparkling Energy Water
Marketing their drinks as “Energy Selzters,” Hiball Sparkling Energy Water offers a complete package of organic energy that includes guarana, Panax ginseng, and the Vitamin B complex.
Hiball combines these effective energizing ingredients into a sugar-free, calorie-free, and refreshing flavored seltzer.
Hiball Sparkling Energy Water has a whopping 160 mg of caffeine, which is more than most brands – so you can expect a powerful and long-lasting boost of energy.
There are seven flavors:
- Lemon Lime
- Wild Berry
- Watermelon Mint
Since they taste like subtly flavored sparkling water, I liked the grapefruit flavor as it’s my go-to flavor for infused water beverages.
V8 is a widely known, popular vegetable juice brand that’s a favorite for a diverse range of occasions, from weekend brunch cocktails to after-school snacks.
Owned by Campbell’s, whose tomato soup recipe is as iconic as the Andy Warhol print that memorializes it., V8 has expanded its famed vegetable juice recipes to include fruit juices and energy drinks.
No matter which product you buy from V8, you’ll get a full serving and fruits and vegetables.
Thus, V8 + Energy gives you the same benefits as its vegetable and fruit-laden juices, plus 80 mcg of caffeine extracted from black tea.
I loved their Pomegranate blueberry flavored energy drink. It wins my vote for the tastiest energy drink.
Featured in Vice, The Infatuation, Vogue, and Architectural Digest, Matchabar is a fashionable Brooklyn hipster café and one of the first exclusive Matcha cafes in the U.S.
After its wildly successful debut in 2014, Matchabar began offering its unique matcha blend in powders and bottles.
The Matchabar Hustle is their Matcha-fueled canned energy drink with a stylish logo to boot.
It contains 120 mcg of caffeine from matcha and green tea extract. It also has lemon and lime extract and sparkling water. To me, it tastes like carbonated lemon tea.
Guayaki Yerba Mate
Yerba mate is a popular Argentinian-born drink made from a strong-tasting green herb that Argentines drink by pouring hot water over the herbs and sucking the infused water out of metal straws from wooden cups.
Drinking Yerba Mate is more common than drinking coffee in Argentina, and its energizing effects are on par with the strongest cup of joe.
Guayaki brings this beloved Argentinian tradition to the world with its diverse line of Yerba Mate products, including fruit-infused, sparkling yerba mate, and loose-leaf yerba mate.
I find that combining yerba mate with fruit juice is the best way to offset its inherently bitter taste. My favorite non-carbonated yerba blend is the Enlighten Mint.
As the name suggests, neuroSonic creates energy drinks to fuel brain power and focus, using a proprietary blend of ingredients proven to enhance brain function and energy levels.
NeuroSONIC has a special blend of caffeine, Alpha GPC, L-Theanine, Vitamin D, and antioxidants all from natural sources.
There are two delicious flavors of neuroSONIC, blood orange and a superfruit infusion. I like the superfruit infusion, which combines goji, pomegranate, and blueberry.
When I’m cramming for an exam or need fuel to get through a dense stack of paperwork, neuroSonic helps me focus and work efficiently.
ZOA Zero Sugar
Founded by champion wrestler and famed actor Dwane “The Rock” Johnson, ZOA Zero Sugar is an energy drink made by fitness professionals for fitness enthusiasts.
Johnson, along with his team of world-class bodybuilders and pro-athletes, came up with an optimal energy formula with all the elements to fuel a workout and build muscle.
Zoa Zero Sugar’s key ingredients include Vitamin C from Camu Camu and Acerola berries for immunity.
You’ll get muscle support and performance enhancement from branched-chain amino acids, choline, and electrolytes.
Finally, energy and focus come from B Vitamins and 160 mcg of caffeine from coffee beans and green tea leaves.
After a can of ZOA, I’m prepared for any workout, no matter how intense it is.
In recent years, Matcha has become a global sensation, with coffee shops and bakeries offering matcha lattes, pastries, and even ice cream.
Japanese in origin, Matcha blends various green tea leaves into a powerful and energizing powder that you can add to hot water.
Matcha Love is a canned beverage from Japan that combines matcha powder with green tea for an extra-strength energy shot.
Matcha Love contains six times the antioxidants of a cup of green tea and has a shot of Vitamin C for immunity.
It’s a USDA-certified organic drink with 28 mg of caffeine and a whopping 192 mg of Catechin Antioxidants.
One shot of Matcha Love makes me feel cleansed and energized without the negative effects of caffeine jitters that come with highly caffeinated drinks.
Rebbl Maca Cold-Brew Coffee
Rebbl is a company with a cause that encompasses health and wellness at every level, from our bodies to our communities, to the planet.
Rebbl originated as the brainchild of Dave Batsone and Palo Hawken to create organic energizing drinks using ingredients sourced from disadvantaged farming communities around the world.
The Rebble Maca Cold-Brew Coffee is one of their delicious creations that combine fair-trade cold-brew coffee with the Peruvian super-herb Maca to provide a tasty beverage packed full of organic, eco-friendly, and responsibly sourced caffeine.
I think Maca Cold Brew tastes delicious, with a rich coffee taste and a creamy texture thanks to coconut milk and a dash of vanilla.
Steaz Energy may be the cleanest energy drink on my list because it’s dedicated to the simplest and least amount of ingredients in its different lines of tea-based beverages.
The company partners with 1% for the Planet to share a portion of their profits to planet protection.
They have yerba mate, green tea, and sparkling Yerba Mate beverages that use a small list of organic and fair-trade ingredients to supply a delicious tasting energy drink.
The green tea cans have organic brewed tea, fruit flavors, acerola cherry extract for Vitamin C and Antioxidants, and stevia for sweetening.
There are various flavors for each line, from unsweetened natural tea and yerba mate to fruit flavors. I liked the Raspberry Green Tea for its bright and tangy sweetness.
Yachak is a yerba mate energy drink company that concentrates yerba mate into 165 mcg of raw caffeine to supply enough energy to fuel any task, from office work to exercise.
While Yerba Mate is known as an Argentinian drink, the herb is native to all Amazonian countries.
Yachak sources its Yerba Mate from Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
In honor of the Amazon’s bounty, Yachak plants a tree in the Peruvian Amazon for every beverage purchased. Their Yerba Mate energy drinks use fruit extracts, cane sugar, yerba mate, and citric acid.
My favorite flavor is the passion fruit, which provides a tangy and sweet flavor that overpowers the bitter yerba mate.
Guru Organic Energy
Originating in 1999, Guru Organic Energy drinks claims to be the pioneering brand in organic, natural energy drinks.
Their long tenure in the industry has resulted in a thorough knowledge of energy sources from around the world as evidenced by their diverse energy drinks.
They have three globally inspired energy drinks: matcha, yerba mate, and the original organic blend.
All three products include guarana and green tea extract in addition to the yerba mate or matcha.
They also use organic cane sugar and fruit juices and offer a sugar-free option.
I recommend their original blend because it contains ginseng and echinacea for energy and immunity. The white grape juice and sparkling water base make it taste like grape soda!
