Sonic opened in 1953 when Oklahoma native Troy Smith condensed his steakhouse and root beer stand into an all-American burger stand with a novel drive-in ordering system.
While drive-in movie theaters had microphone ordering systems in place, Sonic was the first burger chain to make drive-in dining their primary concept.
Nearly 70 years later, customers still delight in ordering their favorite American food from the comfort of their car. In some cases, you can still find car hop waitresses delivering your food on roller-skates.
Sonic is famous for its vast menu of old-school burgers, tater tots, and a wide variety of limeades and fruit slushes. However, they’ve also come up with an impressive breakfast menu with sweet and savory items that run the gamut of American classics.
Below, you’ll find a list I’ve compiled of the best Sonic breakfast dishes that will fulfill any craving and provide you with a hearty meal to start your day.
French Toast Sticks
Sonic’s French Toast Sticks are a more convenient take on one of the most popular sweet breakfasts.
French Toast Sticks come with four thick rectangular pieces of golden, cinnamon-infused French toast with a side of maple flavored syrup for dipping.
French toast is a decadent and rather messy dish that would be difficult to eat in the car on your way to work, so Sonic’s French Toast Sticks have converted a knife and fork meal into a compact meal.
I love their crispy and sugar-dusted outer crunch that cedes into a rich, fluffy inside, which soaks up the syrup so well.
I recommend pairing this sweet breakfast with a hot cup of Sonic’s Green Mountain coffee. This is one of the most popular fast food breakfasts for any time of day!
Ultimate Meat & Cheese Breakfast Burrito
If there’s “ultimate” in the title, you know you’re in for Sonic’s most decadent breakfast smorgasbord.
The Ultimate Meat and Cheese Breakfast Burrito is a savory dream in one huge hand-held Mexican breakfast.
It comes with a warm flour tortilla stuffed with crispy bacon, sausage patty, tater tots, scrambled eggs, shredded cheddar cheese, and creamy, zesty cheese sauce. You won’t find a more filling and satisfying breakfast burrito out there.
I like to add some fresh veggies to the burrito, so I ask for diced onions, tomatoes, and pickled jalapenos.
If you’re a spicy fan, you can ask your server for some Picante sauce packets to drizzle over every bite.
Bacon Breakfast Toaster
The Bacon Breakfast Toaster starts with two thick-cut pieces of Texas toast, toasted to a golden-brown crisp.
Sonic adds a folded egg omelet, crispy bacon, and a slice of American cheese to create the ultimate breakfast sandwich.
The crispy bacon and toast go perfectly with the soft fluffy eggs and the gooey melted cheese.
I like to add even more texture and flavor to the Bacon Breakfast Toaster by ordering diced onions and jalapenos to it.
Sonic also has plenty of great condiments to add zing, spice, or even sweetness. I like to slather the Texas toast with barbecue sauce, for example.
Cinnabon Cinnasnacks With Cream Cheese Frosting
Cinnabon is a well-known pastry shop that has teamed up with Sonic to bring you the most luxurious sweet breakfast in bite-sized forms. Cinnabon Cinnasnacks are cinnamon buns reimagined.
Instead of a round, rolled-up pastry oozing with cream cheese frosting, Cinnabon Cinnasnacks are crispy pastry dough filled with a gooey cinnamon roll filling baked into golden bite-sized nuggets.
They come with cream cheese frosting for dipping. These deconstructed cinnamon rolls have a novel texture that is delightful.
I love them because they are as gooey and flavorful as a cinnamon roll without causing a sticky mess on my hands and face.
SuperSonic Breakfast Burrito
The SuperSonic Breakfast Burrito is a zesty and spicy Mexican breakfast hand-held that will excite your tastebuds.
It comes with savory breakfast sausage, shredded cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs, tater tots, diced onion, tomatoes, and pickled jalapenos wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.
Tater tots are one of Sonic’s most popular menu items for their unparalleled texture and savory taste. I love how they taste inside a breakfast burrito in conjunction with the melty cheese and sausage.
There’s always the option to add zesty cheese sauce for extra decadence, too. I like to spice it up even more by adding their spicy Picante sauce to the mix.
Sausage Breakfast Burrito
If you’re more of a purist and want a simpler breakfast burrito, the Sausage Breakfast Burrito will suit your craving.
The Sausage Breakfast Burrito comes with a warm flour tortilla stuffed with savory breakfast sausage, scrambled eggs, and shredded cheese.
There’s a perfect proportion of cheese, eggs, and meat in this simple yet delicious breakfast burrito. It’s not as over-the-top as the SuperSonic or Ultimate Breakfast Burrito and still gives you a satisfying fullness.
I like to add spicy Picante sauce to it, and I also order a French Vanilla Cold Brew to compliment the savory with some creamy, caffeinated sweetness.
Bacon Breakfast Burrito
Everyone knows that bacon is the king of breakfast food. What better way to showcase bacon than a Bacon Breakfast Burrito?
The Bacon Breakfast Burrito features a warm flour tortilla stuffed with crispy pieces of bacon, fluffy scrambled egg, and cheddar cheese.
Bacon is so savory, salty, and crunchy that anything you pair it with tastes great.
The Bacon Breakfast Burrito is my go-to Sonic breakfast dish because it’s satisfying, decadent, and easy to eat.
My favorite form of bacon is maple smoked, so I add a drizzle of maple syrup to my bacon breakfast burrito to recreate that sweet-savory flavor profile. Don’t knock it till you try it!
Sausage Breakfast Toaster
Another delicious, toasted breakfast sandwich, Sonic Sausage Breakfast Toaster, comes on thick slices of golden Texas toast with a hearty sausage patty topped with a slice of melted American cheese and a fluffy folded scrambled egg.
I love the idea of a Texas toast sandwich as opposed to the breakfast biscuit sandwiches because you get more bang for your buck and more bites.
Also, the lightness of the Texas toast is both texturally satisfying and easier to digest than a dense biscuit.
If I’m especially hungry, I ask for an extra sausage patty. I like adding Sonic’s signature sauce to the sandwich, too.
Jr. Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito
You don’t have to be underage to order the Jr. Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito.
Perhaps you’re not that hungry or want to decrease your calorie intake without sacrificing taste.
Whatever your reason, the smaller yet flavorful Jr. Burrito is a delicious option. It comes on a smaller flour tortilla with crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, and melted cheddar cheese. I’d call it a breakfast taco on steroids.
It has half the calories as its normal-sized counterpart but all the same ingredients and flavorful punch. I add diced onions and jalapenos to it for added flavor and texture without adding any extra calories.
Jr. Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito
Just like the Jr. Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Burrito, the Jr. Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Breakfast Burrito is a mini version of a large burrito with the same combination of savory sausage patty, scrambled eggs, and melted cheddar cheese.
Sonic just halves the mass while keeping the same proportions of ingredients, thus reducing the calorie count. It’s certainly filling for a Jr.’s tummy, but it won’t bust your britches as an adult.
If I’m still hungry after a Jr. burrito, I just make a combo meal out of it by adding a cold brew coffee and a side of tater tots.
Coffee
If you’re a coffee-lover, you probably can’t function without a cup of joe in the morning.
It not only tastes great as a breakfast drink but also energizes you and helps you digest your breakfast.
Sonic has numerous coffee options to accompany its breakfast menu. They use Green Mountain coffee roaster’s 100% Arabica beans to brew fresh drip coffee.
And they use the same beans to make a delicious cold brew, which you can get black or infused with French Vanilla.
On a cold day, I recommend asking for cream and French Vanilla creamer to add to a hot Green Mountain coffee.
