When Do Shamrock Shakes Come Out at McDonald’s?

Every spring, McDonald’s shares one of the most popular seasonal beverages around: the Shamrock Shake. This St. Patrick’s Day inspired milkshake is a fan favorite, and many McDonald’s customers wait for the day it’s back in stores.

Luckily, you don’t have to wait until it’s actually St. Patrick’s Day to enjoy this green treat. The Shamrock Shake returns to McDonalds on February 20th, 2023 in the US.

The popular milkshake returned to US locations on February 20th, 2023, so you should be able to pick one up the next time you pass McDonald’s golden arches. 

In 2020, McDonald’s also released another seasonal treat: The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. McDonald’s McFlurries are extremely popular, so a new flavor is something to celebrate!

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will be back again this year, so you can enjoy either of these festive treats this February and March. 

The Shamrock Shake was available even earlier in locations in Ireland, where it was released on February 2nd this year. 

When Do Shamrock Shakes End? 

The Shamrock Shake is available through March 17th for St. Patrick’s Day.

McDonald’s has not announced the exact date that they’ll stop serving this green milkshakes yet, but it will most likely be a few days after March 17th.

The Shamrock Shake is usually available for 4-5 weeks, so it will likely be gone by the end of March. 

What is a Shamrock Shake? 

A Shamrock Shake is McDonald’s seasonal, mint flavored vanilla milkshake. The shake itself is colored green, giving it a festive look for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the spring.

The original Shamrock Shake was introduced in 1970, and it originally had a lemon-lime sorbet flavor instead of mint.

The mint version of the Shamrock Shake came out in 1983. 

Today, the Shamrock Shake is a popular menu item that fans are excited to see back on the menu. You either love it or hate it! 

How many calories are in a Shamrock Shake? 

A small Shamrock Shake has about 460 calories. A medium Shamrock shakes has 560 calories, and a large has 800. 

How much is a Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s? 

A small Shamrock Shake costs $3.69, a medium costs $4.29, and a large costs $4.79 this year at McDonald’s.

If you want extra whipped cream on top, that will cost an extra 99 cents.

Shamrock Shake Ingredients

What’s actually in the Shamrock Shake? The green tinted milkshake is made with reduced fat vanilla soft serve ice cream, whipped light cream, and McDonald’s “Shamrock Syrup”. 

Shamrock syrup is essentially high fructose corn syrup with mint flavoring and green dye to give the shake its famous green color. 

How To Make a Shamrock Shake at Home

If you love the Shamrock Shake and want to drink it year-round, you can make it at home! 

There are plenty of great copycat recipes out there to get your Shamrock Shake as close to the real deal as possible. 

To make this shake at home, you’ll need vanilla ice cream, milk or cream, mint extract, and green food dye.

Some recipes also recommend adding some maple syrup or a vanilla syrup to better match the true flavor. 

Enjoy McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes while you can! They are available from February 20th, 2023 until sometime in the end of March, until they return again next year.

  1. We live in Meadow Lake, Sask and went to our local McDonalds yesterday, March 10th. We were looking forward to having a Shamrock Shake, only to be told that the promotion is over! How could that be, since it’s not even St. Patrick’s day yet! What a bold faced lie.
    So disappointed
