Montreux Jazz Café

Right by the festival grounds and with sweeping views of the lake, Montreux Jazz Café is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon listening to music and sipping on the handcrafted cocktails.

As you take in the classic French café decor, you can choose between a wide variety of delicious dishes–from French classics like frog legs in puff pastry with a wild garlic cream to a bold barbecue burger. Plus, they have an extensive wine and cocktail list.

I love their slow-cooked veal in a wine and morel sauce over potatoes, paired with a Made in Swiss Bellini with apricot and Prosecco!

Auberge de Chaulin

Rte de Chaulin 81, 1832 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 964 32 70
Visit Website

Near the top of Montreux village with stunning views of the lake, nearby vineyards, and France, Auberge de Chaulin is a traditional Swiss restaurant perfect for a romantic sunset meal.

Owned and run by a married couple, it’s homey and welcoming. Chef Stephanie whips up Swiss and French classics featuring local ingredients like garlicky snails, filet mignon, and prawns, while head of service Christopher makes sure you have everything you need for a great night.

I start with the crayfish tail salad and then move to the lamb shank with rosemary for a tender, rich meal served with their recommended red wine.

Auberge de la Cergniaulaz-Orgevaux

Rte de la Cergniaule 18, 1833 Avants, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 964 42 76

Tucked away in the mountains surrounding the town, Auberge de la Cergniaulaz-Orgevaux is a must-visit when in the Lake Geneva area.

If you visit when there’s snow, it looks straight out of a fairytale. Best known for “la chasse” or the game season, they create amazing dishes with local ingredients with a special focus on meats.

Everything they touch turns tender and full of flavor–you won’t be disappointed! No visit to Auberge de la Cergniaulaz-Orgevaux is complete without trying their rabbit.

It’s rich, flavorful, and completely delicious! I also love the bone marrow starter.

Confiserie Zurcher Montreux

Av. du Casino 45, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 59 63
Visit Website

Located on the charming streets of the town center, Confiserie Zurcher Montreux is the perfect spot to grab lunch after a morning of sightseeing.

The interior is gorgeous and the smell of the fresh coffee and pastries is addicting. It’s best known for its pastries like their famous Black Forest cake, but you can also grab breakfast or lunch.

Their coffee is some of the best in Montreux, especially when paired with a fresh croissant. If I’m not there to include in their decadent pastries, I’ll sit down with a tasty cappuccino and gigantic savory crepe while reading the newspaper–the perfect afternoon!

Du Pont

Rue du Pont 12, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 25 20

Right up the hill from the town center, Du Pont is a Montreux institution, known best for its authentic Swiss cuisine and hearty portions.

Rather than offer a thousand average menu options, they focus on simple Swiss dishes that they have perfected through the years.

If you want to try fondue while in Switzerland, this is the place to do it. I could go for a swim in their truffle fondue–savory, creamy, and well-balanced for a bowl full of melted cheese!

The freshly baked bread, crispy yet tender potatoes, and zesty cornichons were just the cherry on top!

Safran

Grand’ Rue 81, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 966 22 30
Visit Website

Within the four-star Hotel Montreux is the gourmet Restaurant Safran, a culinary masterpiece with breathtaking views of Lake Geneva.

In good weather, you can sit on the patio and watch the boats sail by as you savor your meal. They have a menu that accommodates everyone with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, serving French, Swiss, and European cuisines with some American classics also thrown in.

They’re famous amongst foodies for their Swiss beef burger that has raclette cheese poured on top and served with French fries.

I love the beef burger, but if I’m just looking to enjoy the sunshine on the patio, I’ll order the regional cheese platter with local wine.

Hotel Fairmont Le Montreux Palace

Av. Claude-Nobs 2, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 962 12 12

The Hotel Fairmont is home to the famous Montreux jazz festival and Montreux Palace, a fine dining establishment on the first floor of the gorgeous historic hotel.

Serving mainly European fare, it’s a great spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but brunch is my favorite time to visit.

They even have themed brunches from time to time–my favorite was an Indian food-themed one! The service is impeccable and you could spend hours enjoying the interior design.

I love everything from their seasonal summer menu like the grilled fish caught that morning, traditional Swiss meat dishes, and fresh salads made with local produce.

Huit sushi restaurant

Av. du Casino 17, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 960 32 24
Visit Website

After meals of cheese fondue, rich rabbit, and hearty red meat stews, it’s nice to get a break with some fresh sushi made in traditional Japanese styles.

This is the place to go if you need a palate cleanser from Swiss food. Though they focus on sushi, they also serve other types of Japanese dishes, as well as Korean and Thai favorites like Korean BBQ and Thai curry all at their convenient location by the shore.

I’m obsessed with their fresh sashimi with cold, crisp sake, but I also love their Suki Yakitori Hotpot and Chinese fried chicken with apple and spicy mayo.

Restaurant Le Museum

Rue de la Gare 40, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 16 62
Visit Website

Established in 1948 in the town center, Restaurant Le Museum has been THE place to be for rockstars like David Bowie and Mick Jagger to dance the night away for longer than most of us have been alive.

Now it’s not the music people flock to it for, but the amazing food. Their menu is made to show off the best of what Montreux has to offer.

They serve raclette, fondue, moitie, and boletus sourced from local dairy farms for the ultimate comfort food. Plus, their meats and produce are all from local small farmers as well.

To get the full taste of Montreux, I order the meat fondue, where I can dip paper-thin slices of local beef into pots of bubbling Montreux cheese fondue.

TANGO Restaurant GRILL Argentin

Av. de Chillon 70, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 26 98
Visit Website

TANGO is a typical Argentinian restaurant–aka they specialize in bold meat dishes–with access to some of the best beef in Switzerland.

That combo makes this the perfect spot for the most carnivorous of eaters. Choose from a list of tasty starters like provolone and arugula salad or fresh chorizo.

Then dig into the star of the show at any Argentinian restaurant: the meat dishes. From the classic beef filet with chimichurri sauce to tender ribs eye served with sautéed vegetables in a criolla sauce.

I love ordering a hearty pour of a bold Argentinian red wine to pair with a filet cooked medium rare–yum!

45 Grill & Health

Majestic, Grand Hôtel Suisse, Av. des Alpes 45, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 966 33 33

Located right along the shores of Lake Geneva, 45 Grill & Health is an ideal spot to spend an afternoon with a cocktail (or two!) when the sun is shining.

With one of the best views of the lake in all of Montreux, the food is equally as stunning. They mainly serve European cuisine with a special focus on French food.

You can find classics like beef tartare and locally sourced ribeye as well as free-range chicken breast for a lighter fare.

The artichokes gratiné has a special place in my heart especially when paired with a crisp white wine and the glorious Swiss summer sunshine.

Caveau des Vignerons

Rue Industrielle 30 bis, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 25 70

In the center of town, you can find the gem that is Caveau des Vignerons. With amazing service and a convenient location, it’s a great spot to head for a stress-free night of delicious food and drink!

The interior is stunning with a relaxed, but elegant atmosphere. They focus on serving traditional Swiss dishes as well as other European (mainly French) classics.

They also have an extensive drink menu with local and imported wine and beer, as well as craft cocktails.

The fondue is incredible here, but I love their rosti, an underrated Swiss delicacy made of crispy pan-fried potatoes and topped with cheese and eggs.

Fleur de Pains

Av. des Alpes 45, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 961 18 07
Visit Website

If you’re on the go and looking for a convenient, but delicious meal, you have to stop by Fleur de Pains.

They sell Swiss treats like pastries, bread, and sandwiches that feature 90% local ingredients. Most places in a small lake town in Europe are meant for long, sit-down meals over a bottle of wine.

But Fleur de Pains knows how to still deliver an excellent meal quickly. You can eat in or (my favorite) take your food to go for a Swiss picnic on the lake!

One of the best meals of my entire life was a Fleur de Pains sandwich with locally sourced cheese and thinly sliced roast beef on freshly baked bread with a bottle of French wine eaten lakeside.

Il Brigantino

Av. des Alpes 102, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 963 35 28
Visit Website

If you’re craving something different after enjoying all of the French and Swiss food that Montreux has to offer, Il Brigantino is just the spot to enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine.

It’s a beautiful spot with a lush, green patio and huge light-filled windows. They have all of the Italian classics you know and love with a special focus on seafood dishes.

With locally caught fish and shellfish, they combine traditional Italian cooking methods and local ingredients for creative, modern Italian dishes.

The pizzas and risotto are crowd favorites and keep people coming back again and again. My personal favorite is their grilled sole fish with lemon, capers, and black pepper!

La Brasserie J5

Av. du Casino 32, 1820 Montreux, Switzerland
Phone: +41 21 966 77 55

La Brasserie, located right by the Casino Barriére, is an excellent spot to grab dinner and drinks before a night of dancing or enjoying the jazz the town is known for.

They serve the Swiss classics, but what sets them apart is their abundance of fresh foods like handcrafted salads and small plates.

Because they’re primarily a bar, they also have one of the most extensive lists of alcoholic beverages.

I love starting a night with the beetroot, goat cheese, and caramelized walnut salads and a Montreux Mule cocktail.

Final Thoughts

In a town known for its music, lake views, and cheese, it can be hard for restaurants to stand out, but the best restaurants in Montreux do just that.

From classic Swiss fondue and rostis to Argentinian beef or fresh sushi, you can find anything you could ever wish for in this charming lake town. Just over the border, in France, is the lovely city of Annecy with some other amazing restaurants to check out, too!
