Try these Dutch breakfast dishes to get a taste of the Netherlands!
1. Uitsmijter
Uitsmijter is a favorite breakfast egg dish in The Netherlands.
All you need are the following ingredients to get started:
- 2 slices of white bread
- 2 slices of ham
- 2 over-easy fried eggs
- 2 slices of Gouda cheese
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- Seasoning to taste
This dish is a filling breakfast option that is the perfect way to start your day. It’s a Dutch breakfast sandwich!
Since it is easy to make and contains relatively few ingredients, it is a great snack, quick breakfast, or late-night grub.
You can make the eggs any way you want — but the traditional Dutch method is fried eggs with a runny yellow yolk.
2. Ontbijtkoek
This traditional baked cake is perfect for an afternoon snack with some tea or strong coffee!
The best thing about this savory bread is you can have it any time of the day. I love having this breakfast bread with a latte in the middle of the day after a filling breakfast!
All you need to make this bread is the following:
- 1 cup of rye flour
- 1 cup of all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup of hot milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup honey
- ¼ cup black molasses
3. Wentelteefjes
Do you love French Toast? If so, you will love this sweet and yummy breakfast dish!
I love having Wentelteefjes for weekend brunch with brown sugar and melted butter.
The best thing about this dish is that it reuses stale bread — forget throwing out old bread and turn it into a quick and easy breakfast staple.
To make this dish, you need:
- 2 slices of stale bread
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup of milk
- 2 tbsp of butter
- 1 tbsp of sugar
- 1 tbsp of cinnamon
You need simple baking ingredients to make this sweet, kid-friendly breakfast in just a few minutes!
4. Boterham
In simple terms, Boterham is just bread. Although the Dutch have a fancy word for a piece of bread, Boterham is just any bread that you would like for breakfast in the morning.
I enjoy having a slice of Boterham with Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles) and butter. If you would rather have something American-inspired, try Boterham with Pindakaas — peanut butter!
To make Boterham, you need:
- 1 slice of white or brown bread
- 1 tablespoon of butter
That’s it! Sometimes the simple things are the best.
Unless you want to make your own Boterham — in that case, you’ll have to choose between white, wheat, rye, or another type of bread for your baking adventure.
5. Volkorenbrood
Volkorenbrood is another type of bread that is a filling and savory combination to pair with your morning coffee.
As you can see, the Dutch love bread. And I don’t blame them! This Dutch wheat bread is thicker than your typical white bread or rye, making it the perfect way to start your day.
Top Voklorenbrood with sprinkles, butter, peanut butter, or jam for a sweet treat.
To make Volkorenbrood from scratch, you will need the following ingredients:
- 4 cups of whole wheat flour
- ⅔ tablespoon of salt
- 1 ⅕ cups of cold tap water
- 1 ½ tablespoon live yeast
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
6. Bacon & Apple Pancakes
Although it may not seem like a typical breakfast combination, bacon and apple pair well.
Pairing the sweet with savory flavors makes this one of my favorite Saturday morning breakfast choices when I am out and about in The Netherlands!
All you need to make this yummy breakfast or brunch dish for yourself and four of your closest friends are the following ingredients:
- 1 cup of white flour
- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1 teaspoon oil
- 10 slices of bacon
- 3 apples
7. Hagelslag
As we mentioned earlier, Hagelslag is great! Not only do kids love this topping for their Volkorenbrood or Boterham, adults can’t help but have this sweet snack throughout the day.
Did you know that the Dutch eat over 14,000,000 kilos of this treat per year? We told you they love it!
If you want to make some on your own, it’s pretty hard to make at home since it is just chocolate sprinkles.
Instead, buy some Hagelslag from one of the local Dutch markets, or ask for this as your topping for your breakfast bread when you head to a cafe in the morning. It pairs well with a creamy coffee!
