On The Border Café Style

On the Border is a Tex-Mex restaurant that started selling its products in stores in 1993, starting with its margarita mix and then moving on to chips and salsas. They are slowly-cooked authentic restaurant-style tortilla chips. The Café Style is their signature chip of the eight varieties. These chips are priced right compared to many of the other big brands – thin, flaky, crispy, and delicious. Their ingredients include a blend of yellow and white corn flours, vegetable oils (contains one or more of the following: canola, corn, cottonseed, safflower/soybean oil), and sea salt. Being a thin chip, they often break when dipping them in thick cheeses, so I recommend dipping them in lighter salsas or munching them straight up.

Calidad Tortilla Chips

Calidad Tortilla Chips are one of the most authentic Mexican tortilla chips you can find in stores. The Gruma Corporation in Texas makes these chips, in addition to their three other brands: Mission, Guerrero, and Tortiricas. I like that there is only 90 mg of sodium per serving, so for those watching their sodium intake, these may be a good choice. The chips are also thin, super crispy, and do not break easily. It is a good chip for dipping in salsa. Their ingredients include corn masa flour, water, vegetable oil (cottonseed, corn/sunflower oils), and sea salt.

SANTITAS Tortilla Triangles

SANTITAS Tortilla Triangles are a Frito-Lay brand. I view these as the budget version of the more popular Tostitos variety. I can’t tell you how many bags of these I devoured when I was a broke college student – you can buy these chips pretty cheap – and they still taste as good as Tostitos. They are crunchy, hefty chips cut into small triangles and can handle thick dips or melted cheese without breaking. The ingredients include corn, vegetable oil (corn, sunflower/canola oil), and salt. The bag also warns that Frito Lay produces them using genetic engineering, but if budget shopping for tortilla chips, this is probably the least of your concerns.

Tostitos Original Restaurant Style

Other than Doritos, Tostitos Original Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips are the best-selling tortilla chips in the United States. Tostitos are another Frito-Lay North America Brand, and they come in several varieties, but the original is pretty much the gold standard for tortilla chips. I love these chips for their versatility – they are thin and crispy enough to munch on as a snack but are strong enough to dip in salsas and cheese sauces. I also like that they are completely ubiquitous – you can find these in grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, and gas stations. They are a tad pricier than their competitors. The ingredients include corn, vegetable oil (corn, canola/sunflower oil), and salt.

365 Everyday Value Organic Lightly Salted Tortilla Chips

365 is the Whole Foods Store brand, with over 3,500 products. The 365 Everyday Value Organic Lightly Salted Tortilla Chips are a top-notch option for tortilla chips because of their healthy ingredient panel, including stone-ground white corn, expeller-pressed corn/ sunflower seed oil, sea salt, water, and a trace of lime. At only 45mg of sodium per serving, these are an excellent choice for those on low-sodium diets. They have just enough salt that they are still tasty, and the stone-ground corn gives the chips some good weight that makes them great for dipping. I like these chips because they are one of the healthier tortilla chips but don’t sacrifice taste.

Garden of Eatin’ Yellow Chips

Garden of Eatin’ Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips is another healthy tortilla chip option. The company started making tortilla chips in 1971 and uses high-quality ingredients from long-term, dedicated farming partners. The ingredients include organic yellow corn, expeller-pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil, and/or sunflower oil, and sea salt. These are some of the thickest and heartiest chips you will find – they have a huge crunch and can hold up against all types of dips, salsas, and cheese sauces. They have only 65 mg of sodium for serving, so they are another smart low-sodium option. Similar to the 365 Everyday Organic Lightly Salted Tortilla Chips, I like these because they are healthy and still tasty.

Herr’s Restaurant Style White Corn Tortilla Chips

Since 1946, Herr’s has been a family-owned snack food company that makes everything from potato chips and pretzels to tortilla chips. The company is dedicated to family-centered values and environmentally-conscious production.  Herr’s Restaurant Style White Corn Tortilla Chips have stone-ground white corn, vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: corn, cottonseed, sunflower), and salt. Another budget-brand tortilla chip – you can get them for as cheap – they are a solid option for those looking for good value and quality.

Late July Organic Sea Salt Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips

Late July Organic Sea Salt Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips are one of the best-tasting light tortilla chips. These authentic restaurant-style tortilla chips are rolled extra thin, making them extremely delicate. For those who like a lighter chip that somewhat melts in your mouth, this is the tortilla chip for you.  The ingredients include organic whole ground corn, organic sunflower oil and/or organic safflower oil, and sea salt. They have only 65 mg of sodium per serving. The biggest con of these is they do not hold up well in dips, nachos, or cheese sauces because they are so thin. You can dip them in salsas or eat them out of the bag, but they are not versatile tortilla chips.

Mission Tortilla Chips

The Mission brand is a heavyweight in the Mexican-style food and snack industry. They make tortillas, tortilla chips, wraps, flatbreads, salsas, and dips. They have 7 varieties of tortilla chips: Tortilla Strips, Restaurant Style Thin and Crispy Tortilla Chips, Tortilla Rounds, Tortilla Triangles, Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, Organic Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, and Organic White Corn Tortilla Chips. The Restaurant Style Thin and Crispy Tortilla Chips are a solid option. The ingredients include corn masa flow, water, vegetable oil (cottonseed, corn, and/or sunflower oil), and sea salt. Like other thin tortilla chips, they are not the best option for dipping.  But you really can’t go wrong with anything under the Mission umbrella – all their products are good.

Tostitos Baked Scoops

Tostitos Baked Scoops exist for one reason and one reason only: to scoop up a heaping pile of hot chili directly out of the pot during football season. OK – they are pretty good for scooping up salsa, too – but this product is the absolute best for handling the heavy stuff. Most tortilla chips break when you try to scoop something too heavy, or worse yet everything just falls off the chip. These are specifically designed to eliminate those two problems. The Baked Scoops have 50 percent less fat than regular tortilla chips – only 3g of fat per serving – but they have a whopping 140 mg of sodium and 22g of carbs per serving, so you’re trading one vice for another. The ingredients include whole corn, vegetable oil (corn, sunflower/canola oil), and salt.

Tostitos Bite-Size Rounds

There is nothing the Tostitos company would love more than for you to buy their tortilla chips and a jar of salsa or cheese dip at the same time. To encourage that, they made a chip specifically designed to fit perfectly inside their dip jars: the Bite-Size Rounds.  These unique tortilla chips are the shape of a circle and taste exactly like their regular tortilla chips. They are thin and crispy, and you can eat them in a single bite. The ingredients are corn, vegetable oil (corn, canola, and/or sunflower oil), and salt. I like these chips after a night out when I’m craving some salsa con queso.

Xochitl Salted Corn Tortilla Chips

The Xochitl brand makes a gourmet tortilla chip in authentic Mexican style. I think their Salted Corn Tortilla Chips are as close as you can get to what Mexican restaurants serve. They are thin, light, crispy, not overly salty, and can hold their own in a dip or salsa. I like to warm these chips in the oven for a few minutes at 350 degrees before dipping them in salsa – and washing them down with an ice-cold Modelo Especial – for a truly authentic Mexican experience. The ingredients include white corn, organic palm olein oil, water, lime, and sea salt. These chips are the real deal.
