Dairy Queen has some of the best desserts around. From the time that they opened in 1940, this iconic chain has been delivering some of the most delicious ice creams on the planet.
In 1985, Dairy Queen decided to up its game by adding blizzards to the menu. The classic mixes of candy, cookies, toppings, and delicious vanilla soft serve were an immediate hit.
Incredibly, the mastermind behind the blizzard was Samuel Temperato, a franchisee from Missouri.
He wanted to compete with a nearby custard shop, so he devised what’s now cherished as Dairy Queen’s best-known dessert.
Today, you can find Temperato’s creations in Dairy Queens all throughout the country.
Chances are, you’ve definitely sampled this dessert, but there might be a few blizzards that you haven’t tried.
I grew up working at my local Dairy Queen and have tried most Blizzard flavors! Here is my ultimate ranking of the best Dairy Queen Blizzards!
Oreo Blizzard
The Oreo Blizzard is a delicious treat that tastes just like cookies-and-cream ice cream with a creamier twist.
This perennially popular flavor has whole crushed Oreos beautifully blended with Dairy Queen’s trademark vanilla soft serve. I love the fact that you can really taste the Oreos, not just the Oreo flavor, in this treat.
It’s one of those treats whose flavor profile is just familiar enough to remind you of your childhood, but with a new riff on an old classic.
The Oreo Blizzard is one of Dairy Queen’s most popular treats, and if you haven’t had one yet, you should definitely try it.
Cookie Dough Blizzard
The Cookie Dough Blizzard mixes yummy balls of cookie dough ice cream with ribbons of chocolate fudge and Dairy Queen’s vanilla soft serve ice cream.
Cookie dough ice cream remains one of the most popular ice cream flavors around, and this blizzard showcases it perfectly.
One of the things that I love most about the Cookie Dough Blizzard is the ribbons of fudge.
They blend perfectly with vanilla ice cream and almost give me the impression that I’m eating a delicious hot fudge sundae.
You can get this blizzard at virtually any Dairy Queen in the country, and I’d highly recommend it.
M&M’s Blizzard
What’s better than everyone’s childhood snack? How about classic M&Ms mixed with creamy vanilla soft serve ice cream?
The M&Ms Blizzard is one of the most popular items on Dairy Queen’s list, and it’s very easy to understand why.
The best part about this blizzard is that some of the M&Ms stay intact, while others get crunched up. It has an interesting, exciting texture that makes every bite a treat.
I’ve had plenty of different M&Ms Blizzards, and all of them have one fantastic thing in common; the M&Ms are perfectly distributed within the ice cream, so each bite has some chocolate, candy crunch, and vanilla flavor.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard
If you love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, get your hands on this blizzard as soon as possible.
Just as with the M&Ms Blizzard, the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard comes with different-sized chunks of peanut butter and chocolate, so each bite is a different flavor combination.
I like this blizzard because there are lovely, big pieces of chocolate in it to offset the peanut butter flavor.
Since this blizzard is a little bit richer, it’s an excellent option for sharing. I’d consider it to be the perfect summertime treat!
Turtle Pecan Cluster Blizzard
Turtles are one of the best pecan and caramel candies on the market, and, in my opinion, it was a true stroke of genius for Dairy Queen to incorporate them into a blizzard.
Of course, we all love the classic combination of chocolate and vanilla soft serve, but if you want a little variation on that theme, I would highly suggest the Turtle Pecan Cluster Blizzard.
You’ll find plenty of rich caramel flavor alongside whole huge pieces of pecan. You also won’t miss the chocolate.
The Turtle Pecan Cluster Blizzard has just the faintest dusting of chocolate shavings in it, playing a great supporting role to the caramel.
New York Cheesecake Blizzard
This blizzard is incredible; the authentic flavors of New York Cheesecake with the familiar taste of vanilla soft serve.
The best part for me is the strawberry center core. Mix it all together, and you’ll get decadent cheesecake bites, crunchy graham crackers, vanilla soft serve, and sweet strawberry in every single bite.
Even though the cheesecake bites and soft serve are similar consistencies, they’re different enough in both flavor and texture to lend a lot of interest to the blizzard.
In addition, the graham crackers and strawberry syrup give it the kick of flavor that it needs. Although the New York Cheesecake Blizzard is a relatively new offering, I’m ready to bet that it will become a cult classic.
Snickerdoodle Blizzard
As with the Cookie Dough Blizzard, the Snickerdoodle Blizzard contains big bites of cookie dough ice cream, just with a holiday twist.
Snickerdoodle cookies are packed with delicious cinnamon spice, and it shines through in every single bite, making you feel like you’re in your grandma’s kitchen at Christmastime.
The vanilla soft serve perfectly complements the cookie dough bits, adding a warm base of flavor without competing with the cookie.
Complimenting flavors properly is one of the best things that Dairy Queen does with its blizzards, and this particular blizzard is one of the best examples.
So if you’re looking for a holiday-themed ice cream treat, the Snickerdoodle Blizzard is it!
Royal Rocky Road Trip Blizzard
The Royal Rocky Road Trip Blizzard is packed full of all of the good stuff, perfectly distributed throughout the vanilla soft serve.
Since there are so many different ingredients, you’ll get different textures and flavors in every single bite.
With crunchy peanuts, a creamy marshmallow core, and plenty of chocolate, the Royal Rocky Road Trip Blizzard is an authentic taste experience.
I love marshmallows, so I was a massive fan of the marshmallow core in this blizzard.
Just like the New York Cheesecake Blizzard, the Royal Rocky Road Trip Blizzard has a sweet core that spreads throughout the ice cream as you eat it.
Salted Caramel Truffle Blizzard
The Salted Caramel Truffle Blizzard is a sophisticated offering from Dairy Queen that combines decadent caramel, toffee, richly-flavored fudge, generous chunks of chocolate, and a sprinkle of salt.
The result is a predominately sweet blizzard with just a tiny hit of salt to offset the flavors. It’s a pretty heavy dessert, so I find it ideal for sharing.
This blizzard is a cult favorite, but it’s not available at every Dairy Queen all of the time.
Some only serve it seasonally, so make sure that you get it while you can. If you’re like me, you’ll love the addictive combination of caramel and salt.
Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard
The Oreo Cookie Jar Blizzard is a fun spin on their traditional Oreo Blizzard, with a bunch of additional cookies added just for fun.
Dispersed throughout Dairy Queen’s iconic vanilla soft serve are huge pieces of Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cookie dough, and plenty of fudge.
The result is an explosion of cookie and rich chocolate flavors that mingles perfectly with the vanilla ice cream.
I absolutely love this blizzard because it has elements from some of my favorite blizzards in it. Every bite is like enjoying Dairy Queen’s greatest hits!
Frosted Fudge Brownie Blizzard
If you love fudge, you should definitely check out Dairy Queen’s Frosted Fudge Brownie Blizzard. It’s packed full of chocolatey flavor with an added sweet kick from the chocolate frosting.
Of course, there’s also plenty of chocolate chunks woven in. One thing that I really love about this blizzard is the fact that it has frosting in it. It gives it an interesting textural component and melts into the soft serve perfectly.
Sometimes I crave chocolate, but I find that a whole chocolate dessert is just too much for me. The Frosted Fudge Brownie Blizzard is the perfect solution.
The vanilla soft serve offsets it perfectly and prevents that chocolate overload.
Candy Cane Oreo Blizzard
Dairy Queen’s Candy Cane Oreo Blizzard is another excellent riff on a classic blizzard with plenty of peppermint candy cane bits blended into the vanilla soft serve, Oreo chunks, and a ribbon of chocolate fudge.
The result is a delicious combination of classic vanilla ice cream, decadent Oreos, fudge, and a big hit of peppermint. It’s sure to be a new holiday classic.
Dairy Queen tops off the whole thing with whipped cream and some more crushed candy cane pieces.
Like the Snickerdoodle Blizzard, this blizzard reminds me of the holidays in a fun way. You can also get this flavor combination made into an ice cream cake.
Heath Bar Blizzard
The Heath Bar Blizzard takes crunchy pieces of toffee and puts them center stage, mingling with vanilla soft serve ice cream for a refreshing take on the classic candy bar.
One of the best things about this blizzard is that the toffee is finely chopped. Although I generally like larger pieces of candy or cookies in my blizzards, Health Bars are very sticky and crunchy, so smaller pieces are better.
Big toffee pieces would overpower the blizzard and make it more challenging to eat, so Dairy Queen definitely made the right call with smaller bits.
The result strikes the right notes between vanilla and toffee and is a real show-stopper.
S’mores Blizzard
If you want a dessert that reminds you of all of the best parts of your childhood, the S’mores Blizzard is a solid choice.
Not only will you get that standard, delicious, Dairy Queen soft serve vanilla, you’ll also get generous chunks of graham crackers and chocolate pieces with marshmallows inside.
The result simultaneously reminds you of a warm summer afternoon and a classic night sitting around the bonfire.
I love this blizzard because Dairy Queen gets the proportions of every ingredient just right. Nothing overpowers or competes with anything else. It’s just truly a solid dessert.
Choco-Dipped Strawberry Blizzard
If you love chocolate-covered strawberries, you’ll fall head over heels in love with this blizzard.
The Choco-Dipped Strawberry Blizzard is full of plenty of chocolatey chunks and delicious strawberry sauce. The result isn’t overly sweet or overpowering; just the right balance of all of the ingredients.
Combine these flavors with vanilla soft serve, and you have a winner.
One thing that I really like about this blizzard is the combination of strawberry and chocolate.
Although chocolate-covered strawberries are a popular dessert, you rarely find this combination in ice cream. It’s a great summery treat.
Dairy Queen’s blizzards are amazing treats that you can get in just about any different flavor combination. So whether you’re craving a huge hit of chocolatey fudge, a sweet summery fruit, or a holiday-themed treat, Dairy Queen has you covered.
Some of these flavors have been around for ages and are classic combinations. Others are newer, soon-to-be-classics. Did we miss your favorite Dairy Queen Blizzard flavor? Let us know what other hidden gems are on the menu in the comments section below, and thank you for reading!
