What is Boba?

Boba are small and chewy black balls that are typically placed in the bottom of a drink to provide extra flavor and texture.

Is Boba Bad For You?

It is unknown as to whether or not boba is bad for you, and there are still some people that are skeptical about this drink due to certain health concerns that have been raised surrounding them.

Some people believe that boba contains traces of carcinogenic chemicals, but this has yet to be proven.

However, one thing that we do know is that these drinks are high in calories and carbs, so it is something that you should enjoy in moderation, just like with any other delicious sweet treat.

Boba tea is a beverage that is served cold that has a tea base and then either milk or a fruit flavor. There will be edible pearls in the bottom of the drink, and these are called boba.

Types of Boba

There are a few different types of boba that you can get, and we will explain them for you below.

Tapioca Boba

This is the most common type of boba, and traditional milk boba tea will be served with tapioca balls that are made from starch.

They are usually referred to as pears, and the drink is typically a combination of milk, water, tea, and sugar. However, there are many different variations of this drink.

You can get it either hot or cold, and the pearls will be at the bottom of the cup. The consistency of these pearls is difficult to describe, but they are quite chewy.

The majority of these pearls will be black in color, but there are white or transparent ones too.

Popping Boba

Popping boba is more commonly associated with fruit-based drinks, and it can be used with various different flavors. Popping boba is also completely edible, and they have a gel-like skin.

When these bubbles pop, they burst and the liquid flavor inside will be released. This works to provide an extra burst of flavor. They are usually made of seaweed extract, calcium compounds, fruit juice, water and a sweetener.

Jelly Topping

Another common topping choice are jelly toppings, which are chewy toppings that are almost like jello, and they are rectangular fruit-flavored bits in the drink.

They are not actually made using gelatin, and they are instead made by either Konjar or coconut meat.
