Where to Get Brunch in St. Louis This Weekend

Situated along the mighty Mississippi River, St. Louis was the starting point for the famous Lewis and Clark expedition that paved the way to the nation’s westward expansion.

The famous Gateway Arch commemorates this pivotal time in history while adding a distinguishing architectural feature to the St. Louis skyline.

St. Louis is also home to an amazing music scene, rooted in blues music along with a nationally acclaimed barbecue style.

You can spend the afternoon strolling through Gateway Arch State Park by day, heading over to the colorful Soulard District to find the best barbecue joints and blues clubs.

Before hitting the town, you can occupy a lazy vacation morning with a delicious brunch. St. Louis has an abundance of friendly neighborhood eateries, bars, diners, and cafes in which to savor a variety of brunch offerings that’ll hit the spot.

Whether you want bloody marys and mimosas in a fancy bistro or a family-friendly atmosphere to fill up on a hearty plate of pancakes, you’ll find the best brunch in St. Louis on the following list I’ve compiled after having visited the area on more than one occasion.

Vin de Set

Vin de Set is an upscale yet friendly classic French restaurant in the Lafayette Square neighborhood in a beautiful industrial-chic space with a picturesque rooftop patio.

Owned by Paul and Wendy Hamilton, Vin de Set sources its fresh ingredients from an onsite hydroponic greenhouse to create authentic Southern French dishes.

Weekend brunch comes at a set price and includes a mimosa or glass of champagne. The brunch menu is a three-course format that beings with a bakery basket and breakfast platter to share family-style portions of eggs, breakfast sausage, bacon, and pastries.

My favorite entrée was the Bouillabaisse seafood stew with sea bass, salmon, shrimp, mussels, and saffron broth.

With locations in downtown St. Louis and South Grand Boulevard, Rooster is a European-style café, bar, and modern brunch eatery.

Chefs at Rooster strive to source ingredients from local farms and purveyors, specializing in sweet and savory crepes, sandwiches, and more. The downtown location is a massive, 240-seat space in a modern and bright space.

Rooster is famous for its over-the-top variations of bloody marys with amazing flavors and unlikely garnishes, many of them using up to 17 ingredients.

They also have a wide selection of brunch cocktails, fresh juices, espresso drinks, and tea. My favorite crepe at Rooster is the sweet lemon crepe with chilled lemon curd, blueberry jam, cream cheese, and streusel.

Half & Half

Half & Half is a cheerful, cozy breakfast and lunch eatery in Clayton owned by Executive Chef Mike Randolph and his St. Louis-native wife Liz Randolph.

Half & Half partners with locally famed coffee roaster Blueprint Coffee to offer a seasonally rotating selection of coffees that pair perfectly with their hearty scratch-made American breakfasts.

The breakfast menu has a wide variety of regional favorites, from biscuits and gravy to breakfast tacos, in addition to weekend brunch specials posted every Saturday.

Try the blackberry cheesecake stuffed brioche French toast with a graham cracker crumble for an incredible sweet brunch.

I also loved their Lox Benedict on rye bread with house-cured salmon, dill cream cheeses, red onion, capers, and Hollandaise sauce.

Russell’s on Macklind

Located in South City St. Louis, Russell’s on Macklind is the second location of this family-owned New American café, bar, bakery, and restaurant.

The family-friendly dining space features family photos of the Russells lining the walls and a large glass pastry case to ogle scratch-made cakes, pastries, and other baked goods on your way out.

They serve breakfast and lunch on weekdays and a well-rounded brunch on weekends, with amazing scratch-made pastries, breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, burgers, and salads.

I loved the Breakfast Flatbread with white cheddar bechamel, tomato, bacon, white cheddar, and sunny-fried eggs topped with baby spinach and balsamic vinaigrette.

Southwest Diner

Southwest Diner is as classic and quaint as diners get and will transport you back to the fifties with its red and blue vinyl chairs and booths, soda fountain counter with pie stands, and a bustling open kitchen.

Located in Ellendale, Southwest Diner serves heaping plates of all your favorite breakfast and lunch plates with bottomless coffee to boot.

They have all the classic American breakfasts for affordable prices with some of my favorite scratch-made biscuits and gravy and cornmeal pancakes.

They also make delicious Mexican breakfasts like the breakfast tamale plate with homemade tamales and salsa served with two eggs and home fries.

Brasserie by Niche

Located in Central West End, Brasserie by Niche is a fun and authentic French cocktail bar and restaurant in a European-style dining space replete with red and white checkered tablecloths, a wood bar, and vintage French pop-art posters. It’s a lively atmosphere to enjoy a boozy brunch with friends.

Brasserie has a sophisticated offering of wine, beer, and expertly crafted cocktails to accompany refined French cuisine.

I recommend starting with the sweet beignets served with housemade cheese and dried plum compote. Their Croque madam and fries were as rich and decadent.

The Scottish Arms

True to its name, The Scottish Arms is an authentic, upscale Scottish, Irish, and English restaurant in Central West End that has received RFT & Sauce Magazine’s vote for best British breakfast 9 years and counting.

The dining space evokes an old English pub and social house with elaborately carved ceilings, dark wood booths, and antique chandeliers.

Brunch is served on Sundays with a wonderful selection of British fare with everything from Banoffee bread pudding to fish and chips.

I recommend the Scotch Egg, a boiled egg wrapped in pork sage sausage, breaded, and baked, then served with honey mustard dipping sauce.

Kingside Diner (CWE)

Another Central West End favorite, Kingside Diner offers a modern, reimagined diner experience rooted in the community while offering updated versions of classic American diner food.

The chic and playful interior has a full cocktail bar, serving breakfast and brunch every day while doubling as a hip cocktail bar with late-night eats from Wednesday to Saturday.

Their inventive brunch plates have silly names like “damn Delicious” that certainly live up to their designations.

I recommend the Kingside Slinger, golden hash browns topped with two eggs, a burger patty, black bean chili, shredded cheddar, and chives, served with toast.

MoKaBe’s Coffeehouse

Overlooking the beautiful Tower Grove Park in Tower Grove South, MoKaBe’s Coffeehouse is a proudly queer-owned and operated coffee house in a vibrant and welcoming dining space with a dog-friendly outdoor patio.

They use locally sourced coffee roasters and provide a full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu to pair with an artisanal coffee or espresso drink.

MoKaBe’s is a favorite study spot, but it’s also a lively Sunday brunch spot. Their brunch menu has a small selection of American comfort foods, all of which can be made vegan or vegetarian.

I opted for the vegan burrito with scrambled tofu, vegan sausage, green chiles, salsa, and guacamole in a large flour tortilla, served with oven-roasted potatoes.

Polite Society Restaurant and Bar

Polite Society Restaurant and Bar is a high-end cocktail bar and New American restaurant in a beautiful industrial-chic space that looks like an old-world library, replete with rich mahogany-colored booths, exposed brick walls, and shelves lined with old books.

Located in a historic building in Lafayette Square, Polite Society is both classy and lively.

They offer weekend boozy brunch from a seasonally rotating menu that relies on the freshest seasonal bounty.

The menu is an upscale multi-course steakhouse-style format with a heavy Southern influence. I loved their deviled eggs and cornbread.

Benton Park Cafe & Coffee Bar

Named for the park and neighborhood in which it lies, Benton Park Café and Coffee Bar is a casual neighborhood café, cocktail bar, and breakfast and lunch eatery.

The friendly service, expertly crafted espressos and cocktails, and heaping portions of breakfast and lunch make them a popular spot for social meals.

Their brunch cocktail menu has all the classics, along with a long list of espresso cocktails like Bailey’s Mocha Mint Vodka Latte and my personal favorite, the Victory Lap with banana vodka, banana liquor, milk, and chocolate frappe.

Their everyday brunch menu features omelets and burritos and a long list of specialties that run the American comfort food gamut.

Cinder House and Bar

Located inside the fancy Four Seasons Resort overlooking the Mississippi River in Columbus Square, Cinder House and Bar is a tapas bar in a gorgeous modern dining space with a luxurious outdoor patio.

Led by James Beard Award-winning chef Gerard Craft, Cinder House and Bar offers Latin American cuisine in a fine-dining experience.

You can get breakfast and lunch seven days a week at Cinder House with an adjoining cocktail menu.

I loved their eggs benedict barbacoa with poached eggs, English muffin, Hollandaise, tomato, braised beef, and breakfast potatoes.

Try their double-shot espresso, cocoa, avocado, and peanut butter smoothie for a delicious energy boost.

With locations in Benton Park and Midtown, Egg Restaurant is a fashionable, contemporary breakfast restaurant and bar, offering a creative menu of modern takes on classic global culinary traditions.

They have a full beer and wine list with rotating tap menus along with fabulous brunch cocktails.

I love both spaces, in warehouse-like dining halls with high ceilings and colorful industrial-chic décor.

I especially loved their Tunisian and Middle Eastern breakfasts like the Shakshouka or Tunisian Hash.

They also offer a fusion of American and Mexican brunch dishes like Barbacoa and Grits or, my favorite, the El Cerdo Hash with potatoes, carnitas, spinach, corn, jalapenos, two poached eggs, and chipotle salsa.

Retreat Gastropub

Retreat Gastropub is a casual and lively American gastropub in a wonderful rustic-chic space in Central West End.

Expert mixologist Tim Wiggins creates an award-winning cocktail and aged-sprits menu featuring house pressed juices and scratch-made infusions, syrups, and tinctures.

The food is elevated bar fare that is fully adaptable to meet vegetarian and vegan preferences.

If ever there was a place to enjoy a boozy brunch, it’s Retreat. Their cocktails are by far the best on this list and feature both classic and highly innovative cocktails that convey a passion for mixology.

Their steak and egg sandwich with a heaping portion of thick-cut fries was the perfect dish to soak up all the alcohol.

The Mud House

Located a few blocks from the historic Benton Park, The Mud House is a family-friendly, bustling coffee house and breakfast and lunch kitchen.

Its super cute country-chic interior with a large glass pastry case and fast-casual espresso counter is always packed, catering to professionals on the go, friendly lunch dates, study sessions, and leisurely family brunches.

They have a variety of coffee and tea and sell packaged tea and coffee beans blended and roasted in-house.

Their breakfast-all-day menu has a diverse list of global favorites and unique Mud House creations like the Mud Slinger, with roasted potatoes, vegetarian black bean chili, cheddar, red onion, and two sunny eggs on top.

Yolklore is a fast-casual breakfast joint in the Crestwood neighborhood offering drive-through and dine-in service for breakfast along with a full bakery making award-winning custom cakes.

They offer canned cocktails, fresh smoothies, and an affordable and delicious modern American breakfast menu.

Their unique fast-casual breakfast and bakery concept has been featured in Alive Magazine, Sauce Magazine, Feast Magazine, and more.

The breakfast menu has a selection of specialties like seasonal frittatas, breakfast burritos, falafel plate, and breakfast burgers as well as a build-your-own breakfast sandwich menu.

I loved the Yolklore Smash Burger, a smashed patty with bacon, bacon aioli, a medium egg, cheddar, and pickles on a housemade ciabatta bun.

Billy G’s Kirkwood

Located in downtown Kirkwood, a short drive from St. Louis proper, Billy G’s is a family-friendly Italian kitchen and bar in a large, modern industrial-chic space with a great outdoor patio.

Owned and operated by the Gianino family, Billy G’s is a modern take on a classic mom-and-pop Italian American restaurant with an extensive beer, wine, and cocktail list to add a bit more formality.

Billy G’s weekend brunch features delicious Italian-inspired cocktails like Bellinis, Mimosas, and espresso.

The brunch menu spans the American brunch gamut with southwestern, southern, French, and Italian dishes.

I loved the Breakfast Pizza, with Italian sausage, scrambled eggs, cheese, roasted red bell pepper, red onions, spinach, and parmesan. 

Whether you’re looking for an old-timey diner, a modern gastropub, or even a drive-through breakfast bakery, you’ll find the best brunch in St. Louis with every possible dining experience on my eclectic list of restaurants, coffee shops, bistros, and bars.

In addition, St. Louis has many more excellent restaurants for lunch and dinner worth exploring.
