Opened in 2007, Dough is a play-on-words combination of the owner’s first and last name- Doug Horn. Doug and his wife Lori are both seasoned hospitality industry veterans who spent years studying and perfecting the art of Neapolitan pizza.  Dough Pizzeria Napoletana isn’t just a local favorite, it has also attracted national acclaim, having been featured on shows like Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives and Triple D Nation. Fieri liked Dough so much in 2011 that Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives went back for a second and third taste in 2018 and, most recently, 2021.If you happened to see their appearances on Food Network, then your mouth is probably already watering over their homemade burrata appetizer featuring burrata stuffed with truffle essence, mascarpone, and ricotta and drizzled with rosemary balsamic reduction and extra virgin olive oil. Their pizza is as traditional and authentic as it gets. Try the prosciutto sugo pizza with fontina cheese, prosciutto di San Daniele sugo, sausage, roasted mushrooms and bell peppers, and pecorino romano cheese.

Their beautifully light and airy restaurant, along with a diverse and locally sourced cocktail menu, offers a wonderful atmosphere for small plates and happy hour get-togethers. Their pizzas are superb, but their menu has plenty of imaginative and contemporary fine-dining Italian dishes. Our favorite wood-fired pie is the Bee Sting, with soppressata, caramelized onion, serrano, fresh cilantro, and drizzled honey. Our big plate recommendation is the Land and Sea with a 6 oz beef tenderloin and sauteed shrimp with cremini mushrooms and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus over kale and dressed in hollandaise.

Our favorite round pie is Tina’s Mediterranean with extra virgin olive oil, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, red onions, chicken, and feta cheese. Their homemade meatballs and marinara sauce are a great starter for the table.

The charming red and white checkered tablecloths and kitschy adornments make for a cozy and unmistakably Italian/New York pizza experience. We recommend trying one of their hot or cold subs on homemade semolina buns. For hot subs, we recommend the Salsiccia homemade Italian Sausage sandwich with provolone and grilled peppers and onions. For cold subs, we recommend the Italian sub with ham, salami, capocollo, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, spicy banana peppers, and Italian dressing.

Can’t decide between deep-dish or thin crust? Why not have it all at Trilogy Pizza Bistro. Owners at Trilogy value pizza in all its contemporary American styles, hence the name. They offer traditional New York, Chicago Deep Dish, and California Gourmet wheat pizzas along with salads, pasta, and an impressive selection of wine and beer. With accessible pricing and an enormous 100-seat dining room, Trilogy Pizza Bistro welcomes families, large parties, young professionals, and any other demographic of San Antonians we might’ve left out. Since New York pizzerias are a dime a dozen in San Antonio, we recommend trying Chicago-style pizza for a change. A true pizza pie, Chicago-style, is a thick, dense crust with raised edges where cheese is placed first on the dough, followed by the toppings, and then doused in homemade pizza sauce. It may take longer to bake, but it’s worth the wait.

We recommend starting with the beef and ricotta meatballs in organic tomato sauce or the seared brussels sprouts with four-cheese sauce. If you want a taste of Texas, try the pimento cream cheese poppers. Their specialty 3 x 3 pizza with calabrese cream sauce, three kinds of cheese, and three slices of meat with a honey drizzle to compliment the spicy Italian seasonings is perfect.

They offer giant plates of house-made pasta like classic eggplant parmesan and spaghetti and meatballs, but the real star of the show is the pizza. Try the thick, crispy, yet perfectly chewy Sicilian pizza. Our specialty pizza recommendation is the Clams Casino with white wine sauce, bacon, chilis, clams, crispy shallots, and pecorino.
