I’ve booked rooms for private dining parties in restaurants throughout St. Louis. Now, I want to share my experiences so that you can make the right choice for your special celebration.

St. Louis is a major port on the Mississippi River. Visitors can enjoy all kinds of activities, from visiting the St. Louis Zoo or the Gateway Arch or browsing the exhibitions at the Botanical Garden or the Art Museum.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, and some of them offer exceptional private dining for large groups.

Charlie Gitto’s name is famous: He’s the man who killed Jesse James. But in St. Louis, when you say the name Charlie Gitto’s, nobody thinks about the legendary train robber or his assassin.

Instead, they think of Charlie Gitto’s restaurant. Located on Shaw Avenue in downtown St. Louis’s ‘The Hill’ neighborhood, this location offers two separate private dining rooms.

The Lasorda room is more intimate and appropriate for between eight and ten guests. The larger Garden Room is perfect for up to 100 guests at a time.

The menu is casual and familiar, featuring a variety of Italian meals. Choose from seafood, chicken, veal, and beef entrées, as well as about a dozen different types of pasta.

There are also familiar appetizers like fried calamari, eggplant Parmesan, and meatballs, plus they also offer brick oven pizzas and at least four styles so that you can host everything from a rehearsal dinner to a kids birthday.

Carmine’s Steakhouse is part of the Lombardo family of restaurants. It’s been open since 1934 and is a few blocks from Busch Stadium. Their private dining room can hold just over 100 people.

They specialize in offering luncheon or dinner banquets, and the decor is family-friendly with large comfortable tables in the middle of the room and plenty of space to walk around and chat. The feeling is modern but with a traditional flair.

They offer a dedicated menu for private parties, including self-serve banquets or seated service.

The steak-centric menu offers portion sizing to help you get your head around how much to order for your group, how to set up the bar, and what kind of desserts to enjoy after your meal. There are also other options to choose from, including chicken, seafood, and veggies.


Trattoria Marcella

Trattoria Marcella is just off Pernod Avenue, near Lindenwood Park. They offer an open and airy event space that can fit groups ranging in size from 8 to 80 people.

The owner and chef Steve Komorek gives his attention to each event hosted at Trattoria Marcella. The ambiance is mellow and warm, and the table settings are elegant without being overbearing.

You can choose from any of the traditional Italian dishes on their expansive menu, and you can also order a variety of pizzas.

That means your event could feature anything from the Diavola spicy salami pizza to Osso Bucco. Then you just have to choose whether you want homemade tiramisu or Sicilian cannoli for dessert.


Dominic’s

Dominic’s is in the  ‘The Hill’ neighborhood, a historically Italian enclave of St. Louis. It’s the perfect place for head chef Dominic Gulati and his wife Jackie to serve up the traditional regional dishes of Italy in a comfortable but elegant atmosphere.

Choose from the upstairs party room called the Sopra Room or the Front Room off to the side of the main restaurant space.

The upstairs accommodates up to 60 guests making it perfect for larger birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, or business functions.

The Front Room can only hold about a dozen people. It’s ideal for a more intimate gathering like a family birthday party.

After deciding which space to use, you’ll choose from various Italian dishes and some surprises.

For instance, the antipasti menu features Scottish smoked salmon, snails, and eggplant involtini. It’s not just the usual at Dominic’s.


Eleven Eleven Mississippi

Eleven Eleven was once part of the International Shoe Factory near Lafayette Park. The setting is decidedly open like the old factory floor and features touches of brick and wood and a comfortable ambiance.

The menu, designed by Paul and Wendy Hamilton, draws inspiration from the wine regions of both northern California and the Tuscany region of Italy.

They have a small wine room space that’s perfect for small private parties. It can only accommodate about a dozen guests, maximum. The room is enclosed by glass, so it’s private but still centrally located within the restaurant.

You can choose from either the chef’s tasting menu for a four-course party menu or from the standard menu featuring fresh plates of pasta, loaves of flatbread, and entrees like Braised pork shanks, grilled salmon, and ribeye steak.


Lombardo’s Trattoria

Lombardo’s Trattoria is another restaurant under the Lombardo‘s umbrella. It’s a relatively formal Italian restaurant located in the historic Drury inn building, near Union Station and Fox Theater.

The restaurant is marked by open spaces and comfortable seating, and that applies to the banquet rooms as well.

They have multiple private rooms, so they can accommodate groups that range in size from ten to a hundred people, making it a good destination for anything from a small business luncheon to a formal rehearsal dinner before your big day.

You can choose from either a plated or buffet-style meal, plus appetizers or desserts. Choose from either a luncheon or dinner banquet featuring a variety of Italian dishes. The menu is also organized for parties.

So you can make sure that you order enough Mile High chocolate cake for dessert, the right appetizers, gourmet pizzas, and more. There are also classic Italian entrées like Chicken piccata, pork tenderloin, or veal Parmesan.


Zia’s Restaurant and Catering

Zia‘s began serving Italian cuisine in The Hill neighborhood of St. Louis in 1985. In 2000, Zia was given landmark status by St. Louis, recognizing its historical significance.

Then in 2009, a fire destroyed the building. Zia re-opened in the same space featuring modern decor with lots of glass and smooth dark wood. They offer off-site accommodations for private parties of any size.

You can choose to offer your guests either the full menu at regular pricing or from six to ten items on a limited menu according to your budget.

Their appetizer sampler is the perfect way to start any size party and features a fried tomato shrimp, Crustini, and toasted ravioli. The dinner and lunch menus offer a wide variety of Italian classics to choose from.


Ruth’s Chris Steak House

Ruth’s Chris steakhouse in St. Louis is right off of Chestnut Street and just blocks from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis river walk.

Though it’s part of a chain of steakhouses, you don’t necessarily feel like you’re in a chain restaurant at this location. It’s so close to a couple of the city’s biggest attractions that you definitely feel like you’re in a unique setting.

Plus, they don’t just serve steak. Their menu also features crabcakes, grilled shrimp, lobster tails, seafood specialties, and more. They accentuate the local feel with seasonal classics as dreamed up by the local chef.


Frazer’s Restaurant & Lounge

Frazer’s Restaurant and Lounge is right near the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and Museum, in the Benton Park neighborhood of St. Louis. They offer comfortable decor in a small urban setting, albeit with a globally-inspired menu.

A recent renovation has expanded the floor plan and added seating space for up to 125 guests on a private patio.

The head chef and owner, Frazer Cameron, has traveled extensively, and the dishes on his ever-changing menu or a tribute to the flavors he enjoys from around the world.

Many visitors give this restaurant’s food five stars, but they rave even more about its collection of signature cocktails.


Grbic Restaurant and Private Events

Grbic restaurant serves traditional Eastern European food in an upscale and modern setting. The executive chef Ermina and her sous chef daughter, Senada, ensure that every recipe is made in the traditional fashion.

Senada’s father, Suhleman, comes from a family of butchers in Yugoslavia and still prefers to butcher his own meat.

Their private dining room accommodates up to 60 guests in a large room featuring a gigantic stone fireplace and many traditional touches that transport you to Europe.

Choose from a selection of buffet dinner packages featuring two main courses from their regular menu and other accompaniments to round out your private party.

The food is decidedly old-world and Balkan, featuring Goulash soup, stuffed cabbage rolls, and a variety of schnitzels.


58hundred

58hundred is just off Arsenal Street near Sublett Park. The concept stems from the restaurant’s unique owners, a pair of butchers, and their vegetable-loving wives.

Their private room is moderately-sized and perfect for a work lunch or dinner party. They can rearrange their tables and seating to accommodate the preferences of your party, so you could opt for a traditional seating arrangement or something else. It’s up to you.

Whatever your appetite and food preference, there’s something for you at 58hundred. They have a dedicated menu for events, and as you might expect, based on the ownership, there is a variety of options for both meat-lovers and those who prefer veggies.

So, your dinner party can feature burgers, pasta, vegetarian tacos, and braised beef. It’s up to you.


Cinder House and Bar

Cinder House is part of the Four Seasons Hotel in St. Louis, right in the heart of the downtown entertainment district. It’s not far from the Lumière Pl. Casino and the Gateway Arch.

Since the restaurant is part of the hotel, choose from many settings that can accommodate parties of almost any size.

For instance, a cocktail party of a hundred people could enjoy the reception at the rooftop bar with a view of the Arch.

Or, host a more intimate birthday party for up to 20 in the elegant River North room. There are a variety of spaces to choose from for your private dining experience.

The consulting chef Gerard Craft is a James Beard Award-winner, and much of the menu at Cinder House focuses on wood-fired cuisine strongly influenced by South American flavors.

Chef Craft and his team have an incredible array of menu options to accommodate almost any taste. Hence, everything from a ‘streets of St. Louis’ dinner buffet to a barbecue menu with pulled pork is available.


Pan D’Olive

Located in the northwest corner of Franz Park, Pan D’Olive offers a stunning private event room with high ceilings, painted walls, elegant place settings, and a wine bar situated in the corner.

The restaurant isn’t far from Saint Mary’s Hospital, which is only a few blocks away across Route 64. Their event space can comfortably hold about 80 guests.

The menu offers a wide variety of choices from different areas of the Mediterranean. For instance, you can choose from a variety of pasta and classic Italian dishes, Greek-inspired Lamb Shanks with a vegetable au jus, or a Turkish dish called Izgara Kofte, made from seasoned ground sirloin patties and rice pilaf.

Everyone at your party can find something to enjoy on this menu. Don’t forget to order some of their flatbreads for the table!


Blood & Sand

Blood & Sand restaurant is on Saint Charles Street, just off of North 15th. It’s right near Lucas Park and the St. Louis Public Library‘s central office.

The restaurant’s seating area is focused around a trendy and modern bar space, and the team at Blood & Sand prides themselves on delivering top-notch service in an accommodating atmosphere.

They offer an à la carte dinner menu, but they are well known for their five and ten-course tasting menus.

Whatever menu you choose from, expect to be surprised by dishes like Vietnamese-style snails with charred ginger coconut broth and beef cheek Cromesquis with black truffles.

The food at this restaurant is very high-end, and so is the price tag, so keep that in mind. It’s probably an ideal spot for a corporate dinner, but not so much for a kid’s birthday party.
