Discover Ogawa: Old City’s New Gem for Japanese Omakase Enthusiasts

Philadelphia’s Old City district has always been a melting pot of culture and cuisine. The latest addition to this vibrant scene is Ogawa Sushi & Kappo, a high-end sushi restaurant by the acclaimed Chef Minoru Ogawa. With his successful establishments in Washington D.C., Chef Ogawa now brings his culinary expertise to Philadelphia, offering an exclusive omakase dining experience that promises to captivate the city’s gourmets.

Ogawa’s setting, at 310 Market Street, is intimate and elegantly designed. The restaurant accommodates only 12 guests at a time, ensuring a personalized and immersive dining experience. The décor, crafted by Cait Borkowski, blends natural elements with a Japandi style, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. This thoughtful design complements the restaurant’s focus on offering a curated atmosphere for omakase lovers.

The heart of Ogawa’s menu is its 23-course, 29-piece omakase meal, priced at $200 per person. This is not just a meal; it’s an exploration of flavors and techniques. The omakase includes a variety of cold appetizers, sashimi, and nigiri sushi. Each piece is a testament to Chef Ogawa’s skill and his dedication to the edomae (edo-style) sushi tradition. The fish, primarily sourced from Tokyo’s Toyosu Market, is prepared to highlight its natural taste and freshness.

Ogawa’s menu also features a carefully selected range of sake, beer, and Japanese whiskey. These beverages are chosen to complement the flavors of the sushi, enhancing the overall dining experience. The omakase experience at Ogawa is about more than just food; it’s a journey through taste, tradition, and artistry.

Reservations for Ogawa are a must and can be made through Resy. This exclusivity adds to the allure of the restaurant, making it a sought-after destination for special occasions and culinary explorations. Currently, the restaurant occupies one floor, but there are plans for expansion in the spring of 2024, promising even more culinary delights.
