Motorino specializes in crafting gourmet brick-oven pizzas with creative toppings. Motorino is located only steps from the 1st Avenue train stop. The restaurant is open from 12:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily and offers brunch on the weekends. You can make reservations online. If you order two pizzas, then the restaurant offers a third pizza for free.

I enjoyed the Don Dom pizza with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, and extra virgin olive oil. Other popular pizzas include the Soppressata Piccante, a red pizza with soppressata and chili flakes, and the Stracciatella, a white pizza with cherry tomatoes. The restaurant offers a special with a salad and a pizza for about fifteen dollars for a weekday lunch.

Near the Spring Street metro stop, Nolita Pizza is an authentic pizzeria. The pizzeria uses traditional ingredients like imported cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil. The restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to late-night daily. The pizzas can also accommodate folks who require a gluten-free crust. Nolita Pizza is an East Village neighborhood staple. 

I enjoyed the Buffalo Chicken Pie and the Spicy Pepperoni Pizza. I would also recommend trying the Formaggio Bianco pizza, the garlic knots, and the Baked Ziti. The restaurant also prepares calzones, which are filling and tasty; try the Meatball alla Parmigiana. Follow the pizzeria on social media for the most up-to-date menu specials.

Village Square Pizza is across from Tompkins Square Park, making pizza the perfect option for an impromptu park picnic. The pizza is served in square pieces, and the kitchen uses only the freshest ingredients to create their delicious pies. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner with extended hours on the weekends.

The Grandma pizza is topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce, fresh pesto, grated Parmesan, and chopped garlic. The White Square has fresh mozzarella, whipped ricotta, and drizzled honey. I ordered a few slices to try a few of the various pies, and my favorite bite was the Sausage and Peppers pizza with mozzarella, sweet sausage, roasted peppers, and onions.

Proto’s Pizza serves both Neapolitan-style and deep-dish pizzas. The pizzeria is located between the 2nd Avenue Metro stop and the Ukrainian Village. The restaurant is open daily at 11:00 a.m. and serves lunch and dinner. Proto’s Pizza offers free delivery on all online orders.

All of the pizzas are eighteen inches in diameter. My favorite specialty pizza was the BBQ Chicken Pizza. I also enjoyed the Lasagna Pizza. Other popular menu items include the Vodka Sauce and Bacon Pizza, the Soppressata Thin Crust Pizza, and the Garlic Knots. The Eggplant Parm Hero with added cherry peppers is an incredible other-than-pizza bite.

Located in the heart of the Ukrainian Village, East Ville Pizza is a restaurant serving pies, salads, and calzones. The restaurant is open between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. daily. East Village Pizza has been serving the community since January 1997 and uniquely serves Mediterranean Italian fusion dishes. 

Visitors can buy pizza by the slice, and the restaurant offers gluten-free crust options. I enjoyed the Pepperoni Jalapeno Pizza and the Mushroom Pizza. Other popular menu items include the Meat Lover’s pizza and the White Pie. Be sure to grab the baklava or tiramisu for dessert.

Sauce Pizzeria is a hip pizzeria focusing on crafting creative pizzas with accompanying dipping sauces. The establishment also offers soft-serve ice cream and craft sodas. The restaurant is open between 11:00 a.m. and at least midnight daily. Sauce Pizzeria is near the East Side Outside Community Garden. 

I enjoyed the Al Pastor pizza with tomato sauce, pineapple sauce, mozzarella, pecorino, roasted pork, pickled red onion, jalapeño, and cilantro. Also, try the Heritage Sausage pie with homemade sausage and garlic. Be sure to dip your crust in Grandmother’s Tomato Gravy, the restaurant’s signature dipping sauce. The kitchen can make pizzas on a cauliflower crust.

Located near the Bowery by the 2nd Avenue metro stop, Lil’ Frankie’s is a delicious pizzeria serving the neighborhood since XX. The restaurant offers wood-fired pizzas and various other Italian dishes. The pizzeria is small yet welcoming; it is an excellent place for a date night dinner.

Start your meal with the Orange & Fennel Salad, then choose between various pizzas and kinds of pasta. I enjoyed the Pizza Fontina with bechamel, fontina, and parmigiano, and the Handmade Tagliatelle Bolognese. With nearly fifteen different pizzas–like mushroom, goat cheese, and prosciutto–the menu has something for everyone.

Numero 28 is a relaxed restaurant concentrating on wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza and traditional Italian meals. The restaurant’s interior is inviting with a warm wood-paneled ceiling. The pizzeria is near Abe Lebewohl Park, which holds annual summer concerts—the perfect place to take a Numero 28 slice. The restaurant opens at noon daily and offers dine-in, takeout, and delivery options. 

I enjoyed the Calabrese pizza with red sauce and the Cacio e Pepe pizza with white sauce. Other popular menu items include the Carbonara pizza, the Spaghetti Meatballs pasta, and the Calamari Fritti. The restaurant offers vegan and gluten-free pizzas. During weekend brunch, try the panini.

With a chalkboard menu over the counter, Stromboli Pizza is a rustic restaurant with intimate seating options. The restaurant is open daily between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., making it the best spot for late-night pizza in the East Village. Stromboli Pizza has been serving pizza since 1976.

The menu is extensive and a good mix of traditional flavors and creative new bites. I enjoyed the sausage pizza, but the pepperoni is a delicious classic as well. Try the BBQ Chicken Pizza or the Eggplant Pizza for something new. I would also recommend ordering the ricotta calzone, the chicken hero, and the Stromboli, of course!

Artichoke Basille’s Pizza is about a block from Stuyvesant Square Park. The pizzeria is a counter pickup style eatery, perfect for lunch in the park or dinner at home. Business partners Francis Garcia and Sal Basille opened Artichoke Basille’s in 2008, and over the years, the restaurant has been highlighted by The New York Times and The New York Post. The restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. 

Order the signature artichoke pizza. I also enjoyed the Crab pizza with crab sauce, mozzarella, and a surimi stuffing. The Staten Island pie is a local favorite with meatballs, red onions, and ricotta cheese. Don’t forget to pick up one of the restaurant’s cookbooks so that you can try your hand at making pizza at home

Two Boots East Village

Two Boots East Village is a unique restaurant that serves cornmeal-crusted pizzas with creative Cajun toppings. The pizzeria has multiple locations across New York City. Two Boots opened in the East Village in 1987 and is named for the “boot” shapes of both Italy and Louisiana. The restaurant opens daily at noon and has extended weekend hours. 

I enjoyed the Tony Clifton pizza with shiitake mushrooms, Vidalia onions, sweet red pepper pesto, and mozzarella. The Bayou Beast is topped with spiced shrimp, crawfish, andouille, jalapeños, and mozzarella. I would also recommend the My Brilliant Vegan Friend pizza with vegan sausage, broccoli rabe, hot cherry peppers, and Daiya non-dairy cheese.

Finding pizza in the East Village is simple if you know where to look. From the edges of Tompkins Square Park to the Ukrainian Village, the pizzerias we visited and the creative pies we sampled were some of the best in the country! From the classics like cheese and pepperoni to cajun and Mediterrane fusion pizzas, the diversity of each bite was exciting and satisfying.
