Next to the Ellison Valencia Gallery is Boulevardier. This upscale restaurant is the perfect restaurant when you want to treat yourself, celebrate a birthday, or impress a date. The decor inside is minimal, and the space doesn’t scream upscale at first glance, but this bistro serves some of the best food and drinks around. Boulevardier serves classic French and American cuisine. They have a lengthy wine, beer, and cocktail list for you to enjoy while you wait for your meal. I can never resist their poached egg salad, oysters, and the wild boar pasta.

If you’re looking for a great Italian restaurant in the Bishop Arts District, you need to head to Lucia. You’ll find it on North Bishop Avenue in a beautifully rustic setting. The rustic restaurant has a cozy feel since the building is originally from the 1920s. Inside, it’s relatively straightforward with dim lighting, great staff, and exposed brick. Lucia serves authentic Italian cuisine. The menu changes seasonally, so what you see online may not be what’s on the menu when you go. That being said, it’s still similar. They offer salami and cheese plates, rainbow trout, and several pasta dishes. Their carrot cake is the perfect dessert if you still have room.

Sometimes all you want is a casual pizzeria to enjoy a great pizza and a cold beer. Eno’s Pizza Tavern is that place in the Bishop Arts District. It’s just up the road from Lucia on North Bishop Avenue. The restaurant is casual and features old wood throughout the space. Eno’s is known for their gourmet thin-crust pizzas, but they have other dishes too. They have a small selection of appetizers and pasta dishes if you’re not craving pizza. I love their truffle cheese bread to start and the central pie with goat cheese and bacon.

You can’t go to Dallas without eating Texas barbeque. Lockhart Smokehouse BBQ is one of the best options in the Bishop Arts District. It’s on West Davis Street, near Revelers Hall. The restaurant is a counter-service joint, making it great when you need a quick but satisfying bite to eat. Lockhart Smokehouse has all your favorite barbeque food. They smoke their meats daily to ensure you’re getting the juiciest barbeque possible. The brisket and jalapeno sausage are two of their most popular meats, but the sides are where it’s at. My favorites are their brisket-deviled eggs and mac and cheese.

Oddfellows is a modern diner on West Seventh Street in the Bishop Arts District. I say modern diner because it serves classics as you’d find in a traditional diner, but the decor and atmosphere feel much more modern. There’s exposed brick, plants everywhere, and concrete flooring. They have a daytime and dinner menu depending on what time you arrive. During the day, they have toasts, soups, salads, sandwiches, and other lighter options. I love their shrimp and grits and breakfast scramble. There are several of the same dishes for dinner, but they also have some of the best fried chicken you need to try.

Nestled amongst the bars and restaurants on North Bishop Avenue is Emporium Pies. This sweets shop is a great place when you’re craving pie or something to satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s in an older home and has that comforting feeling when you walk inside. Emporium Pies makes everything fresh daily. Their most popular choices are their blueberry pie and French silk pie. Regardless of what slice of pie you order, you have to try their homemade vanilla ice cream on top.

Near Oddfellows on West Seventh Street is Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. The restaurant is set in a modern space with concrete floors, metal barstools, and minimalist decor. People often flock to this restaurant, so it’s usually busy but well worth visiting. Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. serves grilled cheese, comfort food, and cold beer. They also have a great selection of soups to pair with your sandwich. I’m obsessed with their broccoli cheese soup, grilled cheese cheeseburger, and grilled pimento cheese.

Veracruz Cafe is on the corner of North Bishop Avenue and West Eighth Street. This casual restaurant sits in a stunning brick building with a large sign featuring the name. When you walk inside, you’ll be greeted by friendly staff, wood paneling on the walls, and warm lighting throughout the restaurant. Veracruz Cafe serves authentic cuisine from Mesoamerica. This includes dishes from Mayan, Aztec, and Huasteco cultures. The Veracruz region of Mexico inspires all their plates, and it’s all fabulous. My favorite dishes on their menu are the high mountain tostadas, sour cream enchiladas, and mole xiqueno.

You’ll find Kessler Baking Studio Bishop Arts across the street from Lake Cliff Park on North Beckley Avenue. This restaurant is in what looks like your typical house with a bright red front door. My favorite part is that the stairs that lead to the front door feature different paintings of desserts. It’s a bustling yet laid-back bakery. Kessler Baking Studio features several kinds of desserts they make almost daily. Everything they make is from scratch and uses locally sourced ingredients. They’re known for their cookies, brownies, and blondies. If you’re craving something sweet, you have to try their chocolate pecan brownie and their classic chocolate chip cookies.

Picole is a colorful restaurant on West Davis Street in the Bishop Arts District. If you’re walking around the neighborhood, you can’t miss this joint. It’s a bright white building with vibrant colors painted on the building. It’s a lively yet casual spot to enjoy a great meal and drinks with friends or on your own. The patio is my favorite place to sit when here. This restaurant is a gourmet popsicle and ice cream shop in the neighborhood. It’s flooded with people during the summer, but it’s still a great place to visit when it’s chilly out. They source all their ingredients from local suppliers and change their menu when they create seasonal flavors. My favorites are their tequila sunrise, s’mores, and strawberry cheesecake pops.

Sketches of Spain is on West Eighth Street and North Zang Boulevard. The restaurant is housed in an old home turned restaurant. This gives it a welcoming and comfortable feeling. The space is modern and offers an elegant feel while still being a place to eat while wearing jeans. The cuisine you’ll find on the menu here is traditional Spanish cuisine. If you want to get more specific, they focus on cooking from Northern Spain. To start your meal, I can’t recommend the roasted eggplant enough. For an entree, the Fideuá and tripe stew is to die for. Be sure to check out their extensive wine list while you’re here!

Less than half a mile from Kidd Springs Park is Encina. Located centrally on West Davis Street, this is another excellent restaurant to pop into when you’re feeling a little peckish. The restaurant is beautiful with modern touches like leather barstools, greenery, and plenty of natural lighting. Encina’s menu is what the chefs here call adventurous, and it changes seasonally to accommodate for new menu items. Much of the menu feels like upscale American fare. My favorite dishes are braised lamb shank, skillet cornbread, and farro risotto.

Along one of the main stretches in the Bishop Arts District are Stock and Barrel. You’ll notice the restaurant as you’re walking by due to their large wood planters lining the spot and large sign on the wall. Stock and Barrel is a laid-back establishment that’s known for friends gathering together to catch up after a long week. Stock and Barrel serves locally sourced American cuisine. They have something that almost everyone will enjoy. For starters, their whipped feta and wagyu meatballs are my favorites. They’re great for sharing and while you enjoy your favorite cocktail or glass of wine. For entrees, I love their crab-fried spaghetti.

A three-minute walk from the Bishop Arts STEAM Academy is Paradiso. Nestled on North Bishop Avenue, this Mediterranean restaurant is a hit with locals and visitors. The interior is beautiful with Earth tones, bright white walls, and eclectic rugs and plants throughout the space. It looks trendy and is a casual place for a bite to eat. Paradiso serves cuisine inspired by countries in Southern Europe. They’re open for lunch and dinner most days and then brunch on the weekends. Some of the best menu items they offer are their grilled octopus, chorizo and olive pizza, and the rock shrimp fra Diavolo. Their French onion green beans are a great side dish for any meal.
