With four locations in Dallas and two in the surrounding suburbs of Fort Worth and Arlington, Cane Rosso is a Neapolitan-style pizzeria, wine, and cocktail bar in large, hip yet casual spaces, each with a giant wood-fired oven as the centerpiece. Owner Jay Jerrier spent years studying the art of Neapolitan pizza from the top authorities, the AVPN Neapolitan Pizza Association. Cane Rosso serves a wide variety of cocktails, wines, small plates, salads, pasta, and sandwiches in addition to wood-fired pizzas. I would start with the fried artichokes with parmesan, bread crumbs, and Calabrian chili aioli. Their inventive pizzas use house-made dough and imported San Marzano tomatoes. Try the Johnny Utah, with meatballs, provolone, roasted peppers and onions, tomato sauce, and smoked mozzarella.

Enjoy a brew with lunch or dinner at Eno’s. They have a great lunch special with soup and a two-topping personal pizza for under $10. Their pizzas are gourmet and full of local vegetables. With decades of experience in pizza making between the trio, you can expect award-winning NY-style pizza in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. The thin, crispy crust with a chewy and tender end characteristic of NY-style pizza is perfectly executed at Zoli’s, and they offer large round, and square-shaped pies. I recommend the Honey Bastard with mozzarella, hot soppressata, bacon marmalade, and habanero honey.

Olivella’s is an authentic traditional Italian restaurant and pizzeria with locations across from SMU, in the fancy Lakewood neighborhood, and Fort Worth. USA Today voted Olivella’s the best pizza in Texas, and the Dallas Observer has voted them the best pizza in Dallas three years in a row. Olivella’s has onsite wine cellars with dozens of imported wines to enjoy by the glass or bottle. I recommend starting with traditional antipasti like house-made meatballs and mozzarella or pesto, goat cheese focaccia with sun-dried tomatoes. As for pizza, I recommend the Al Gorgonzola with homemade mozzarella, gorgonzola, pears, and walnuts.

Owned and operated by father and son duo Asip and Gezim Asani, Bay34th Street Pizzeria is a New York-style pizzeria located in the Inwood neighborhood. The small, welcoming local is a great place to dine in or take a calzone and a slice to go. The open kitchen has a marble bar display case with a variety of freshly baked pies, calzones, and cannoli, just like a typical Brooklyn pizza spot. The menu features calzones, Stromboli, chicken dishes, pasta, hot sandwiches, and wings in addition to their show-stopping pizza. Their baked ziti is excellent, but if you’re looking for a great specialty pie, I recommend the eggplant parm pie with oven-baked eggplant, basil, olive oil, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese.

You can dine on the beautiful outdoor patio or grab a large square slice to go for lunch or dinner. Sicilian pizza has a square shape, dense yet chewy deep-dish crust, and ample char. Traditionally, Sicilian has few toppings, if any, but Pizza Leila breaks the tradition with some amazing specialty Sicilian offerings. Still, I recommend the classic Grandma’s Square with fresh mozzarella, roasted tomato sauce, and fresh basil. If you want to spice things up, try the Vodka Sausage and Peppers pizza with vodka cream sauce, Italian sausage, and yellow peppers.

Unlike conventional fast-food pizza establishments, the specialty pizzas at Zalat Pizza are as gourmet and exotic as most of the dine-in restaurants on my list. Zalat Pizza has a lot of Pan-Asian flavors worth trying. Take, for example, the Pho Shizzle pizza with chicken, red bell peppers, caramelized onions, hoisin, and sriracha swirl, topped with basil and cilantro garnish. I tried a pizza with southern flair known as the Nashville Hot Chicken and Pickles, with crunchy pickles slathered with sweet and spicy Nashville Hot sauce, sriracha, chicken, and red onions.
