Less than half a mile from Lincoln Park is Ginko Restaurant. This modern sushi restaurant features bright red walls with black accents. The sushi bar is in the middle of the restaurant, so you might be able to get a glimpse of the sushi chef perfecting their work. Ginko’s has everything you could want in a sushi restaurant. They have sashimi, specialty rolls, vegetable rolls, nigiri, and more. The Ginko roll with tuna, hamachi, salmon, cucumber, avocado, kaiware, lettuce, tobiko, and daikon was fantastic. I also thoroughly enjoyed their vegetable tempura and the spicy scallop chips appetizer.

Sushi 86 is in the heart of downtown, inside the 5th Street Arcades. This laid-back sushi joint is the perfect spot when you want quick but high-quality sushi or poke. The decor is minimal, but everyone is very welcoming when you arrive. I prefer to sit at the sushi bar here, but they have plenty of tables if you prefer that. You can order six or eight-piece rolls here or even create a custom sushi roll that I thought was unique. I tried their dynamite roll, smoked salmon roll, and spicy tuna roll. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Even though I could try this one, I recommend the Philli roll, the smoked salmon roll with cream cheese.

You’ll find Pacific East Japanese Restaurant near Forest Hills Park in East Cleveland. When you first walk up, you’ll notice the restaurant is unassuming. But the food is excellent and well worth a try. The atmosphere is casual and laid-back, with plenty of inside seating. Pacific East’s menu is vast. Besides their great sushi, the yellowfin tartare and chicken katsu were terrific. As for their sushi options, they have something for everyone and even sushi dinners that include a side of sushi rice. Their house sashimi comes with 36 pieces, and I enjoyed their eel and mushroom roll.

Out near Shaker Heights, you’ll find Shuhei Restaurant on Chagrin Boulevard. The restaurant is inside an office building, which is a little odd but don’t let that put you off. This classic Japanese restaurant features servers in authentic kimonos, Japanese decor, and a peaceful ambiance that’s perfect when enjoying a great meal. Something I love about Shuhei Restaurant is that they have great sushi and sashimi and offer full meals with it instead of just the rolls. I recommend the Maki sushi dinner with Crab Salad, Fresh Alaska, Anakyu, Negi Hamachi, and Spicy Tuna. You can also get a bento box if you just want an appetizer roll.

You’ll travel west to Lakewood for this fantastic sushi restaurant. Hako is in a beautiful brick building with shades of pale yellow and traditional Japanese decor. I loved how calming the restaurant felt. While many restaurants are bustling and lively, I appreciate how peaceful it feels, even when they’re busy. At Hako, they offer rolled and hand-rolled sushi, dumplings, and other great Asian dishes. They offer a variety of specialty rolls, but you can’t go wrong with classics. My server brought me their three favorite rolls: the yum yum roll, tempura California roll, and the king salmon roll. Everything was great, including the wasabi it came with.

Kenko Cleveland is on Euclid Avenue in the heart of University Circle. People in Cleveland love this joint because it’s a quick, counter-service restaurant that gives you fresh sushi without waiting for long. The modern space has concrete floors, dark walls, and light wood furnishings, making it a stunning restaurant. My favorite thing about Kenko is that you can choose one of their classic sushi rolls or make your own. If you can, making your own is a fun experience. You get to choose your protein, veggies, sauces, and toppings. They’re all wrapped in a seaweed wrap, and this way, you get precisely what you want.

South of downtown Cleveland is Kintara All You Can Eat Sushi and Hot Pot. This restaurant is in Brooklyn in the Ridge Park Square shopping center. The outside isn’t anything special, but the inside is spacious and beautifully decorated with plants and other classic Japanese decorative items. When you’re craving sushi for lunch, this restaurant offers a great lunch special. You can get a five-piece chef’s choice with a California roll, a ten-piece chef’s choice sashimi, or a combination of sushi and sashimi. I also love their all-you-can-eat option. My favorite roll here is their fire dragon egg with spicy crab.

Marble Room Sushi is downtown, inside the Key Tower Lobby. This beautiful downtown restaurant is elegant, sophisticated, and a great spot when you want to impress someone on a date or for a special occasion. There are marble floors and remarkable paintings, and the chefs will often come personally and ask you how your sushi is, which is a hospitable touch. Before indulging in some high-quality sushi, I opted for a cup of ginger soup. It was the perfect, light starter. Their sushi menu is limited compared to other restaurants, but their fish and chips roll and spicy tuna roll are worth trying.

If you’ve been sampling beer at Fat Heads Brewery and want sushi, Ohashi is less than a five-minute walk from there on Lorain Road. The restaurant is simple, with tiling and carpet that you typically see in shopping center restaurants, but the ambiance is tranquil, and it’s the perfect place for a quiet evening. Ohashi Sushi has one of the best lunch options in the Cleveland area. You can get a sushi bento box. This comes with four pieces of a California roll, edamame, a salad, and some fruit. Their smoked salmon wrapped in squid is also a delicious thing to try here.
