Although Baltimore may have the best crab cakes in the U.S., they also have a growing restaurant scene for plant-based eaters.

The Land of Kush is a vegan soul food restaurant in a cute and colorful dining space in Seton Hill.
They’ve been serving down-home cooking to vegans and meat eaters alike since 2011, garnering a huge following.
Their hyper-real takes on meaty Southern cooking have attracted celebrity customers like Angela Davis and Stevie Wonder, not to mention features in The Baltimore Sun, PBS, and PETA.
The menu has all the Southern classics, from pant-based ribs to mac n cheese.
I loved their black-eyed pea fritters, which I ordered with a side of collard greens and yams.
414 Light St, Baltimore, MD 21202
Located in a beautifully designed modern space in Otterbein, Double Zero is a high-end plant-based pizzeria and natural wine bar.
Double Zero is a part of an internationally recognized plant-based restaurant group called Matthew Kenney, whose mission is to bring high-end vegan dining experiences to cities around the world.
Double Zero’s kitchen revolves around a custom-built wood-burning oven, piping out perfectly crafted artisanal Neapolitan pizzas with colorful, plant-based toppings.
They also have a wonderful wine and cocktail menu.
My favorite specialty pizza was their white Bianca pizza with macadamia ricotta, cashew mozzarella, parmesan, pepperoncini, rapini, and plant yolk.

Dodah’s Kitchen is a warm and cozy vegan comfort food eatery in Midtown, a few blocks from the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
Dodah’s Kitchen has a fast-casual counter format where all the home-cooked foods are on display behind a glass counter.
You can peruse a menu or simply choose what looks good, creating your own comforting plate of stews, plant-based meats, and salads.
Dodah’s Kitchen serves brunch all day as well as house-made desserts and drinks.
I went for their plant-based meat lasagna with oreo cheesecake for dessert.

Located inside the historic Cross Street Market in Federal Hill, Gangster Vegan Organics is a juice bar, raw bar, and vegan restaurant.
Their colorful and creative dishes are both stunning to look at and taste.
They’ll also leave you feeling satisfied in the healthiest, cleanest way.
They’re primarily a take-out restaurant, serving fresh-pressed juices in cute glass bottles and food in recyclable carton to-go boxes.
However, the market has a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy your meal.
Their bowls and salads are incredible.

Harmony Bakery is a vegan and gluten-free bakery owned by a local Baltimore family, Renee and Don Gorman, and their children, Lisa and Kirk.
Harmony Bakery sources its ingredients from local farms and purveyors to create a menu of wheat, soy, peanut, and dairy-free dishes.
They offer sweet and savory pastries, tarts, and quiches, along with a lunch menu of sandwiches, salads, flatbreads, and mock-meat dishes.
I tried a savory chickpea tart with chickpea filling, cartelized onion, and coconut cilantro chutney.
It was delicious, and I still had room for a slice of vegan lemon cake.
The “Charm’tastic Mile, 414 Light St, Baltimore, MD 21202
A sister restaurant to Double Zero, Liora is the Matthew Kenney Group’s ode to Baltimore.
All the beautifully presented, contemporary American dishes at Liora are inspired by Baltimore’s history and culinary culture.
Liora is a high-end, fine dining vegan bistro and cocktail bar in a beautifully designed industrial-chic space with high ceilings and succulents lining an entire accent wall.
The unique menu offers a superb multi-course tour of New American cuisine.
I started with oyster mushroom barbacoa tacos with avocado puree, pepitas, and pico de gallo.
My main dish was the creamy and bright risotto with lemon cashew parmesan, trumpet mushrooms, and pepper gremolata.
1626 Aliceanna St, Baltimore, MD 21231
Located in the heart of Fells Point, blocks from Frederick Douglass Maritime Park, Liquid Earth is a longstanding juice bar, raw bar, and vegan eatery in an intimate and funky space.
Opening in 1996, Liquid Earth is a proud pioneer of vegan and raw cuisine in Baltimore.
Liquid Earth is committed to sustainable, local ingredients and the healthiest and intelligently engineered foods to satisfy all your micro and macro-nutrient needs.
It’s the very epitome of clean eating.
Their vast menu has raw smoothies, regular smoothies, a raw food menu, salads, juices, and sandwiches.
I recommend the Fill Phace juice with honeydew, mint, ginger, pineapple, banana, orange, and grapefruit.
Baltimore’s favorite neighborhood brunch spot, Miss Shirley’s Cafe is a bright and cheerful breakfast and brunch cafe that has received praise from nearly every local press junket.
Miss Shirley’s was also featured on Food Network’s hit show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.
Miss Shirley’s Cafe has locations in Roland Park, Inner Harbor, and the Baltimore Airport.
They aren’t a strictly vegan restaurant, but they have a separate vegan menu.
The vegan menu has gluten-free griddle cakes, seasonal fruit plates, avocado toast, and a long list of savory lunch bowls and sandwiches.
I recommend the Vegan Park Place Powerhouse sandwich, with avocado mash, greens, tomato, onion, cucumber, and shredded carrot on fresh sourdough with a side of hash browns.
2915 Greenmount Ave, Baltimore, MD 21218
My Mama’s Vegan is a carry-out vegan comfort food restaurant and catering service out of a friendly Harwood neighborhood kitchen.
Their comfort food is completely plant-based and takes inspiration from global soul food traditions.
Their menu is one of the most extensive I’ve seen, with burgers, bowls, sandwiches, tacos, fried chicken, burritos, seafood, nachos, loaded fries, and so much more.
I was in the mood for Chinese, so I ordered the General TSO, using battered and fried cauliflower instead of chicken, tossed in the traditional General Tso sauce over basmati rice with veggies.
Featured in the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Business Journal, and Noah Eats, Ekiben is a fast-casual and gourmet Pan-Asian eatery.
With locations in Hampden and Fells Point, Ekiben has made Yelp’s list of the top 100 eateries in Baltimore.
You won’t find more authentic Asian street food, taking inspiration from China, Thailand, Taiwan, and even Mexico.
Their small menu is not fully vegan, but their selection of vegan dishes is award-winning in my book.
I could eat the perfectly fried Tofu Brah topped with spicy seasonal slaw all day.
900 E Northern Pkwy, Baltimore, MD 21212
Located inside the Kadampa Meditation Center and Buddhist Temple in Lake Walker, World Peace Cafe is a welcoming and affordable vegan cafe and bakery.
They offer hearty, colorful, and healthy home-cooked meals in an intimate space with a zen and welcoming atmosphere.
The grounds surrounding the Temple are stunning, and you can take a post-meal stroll.
Menus change daily, and there are short two-hour dinner and lunch slots.
The meal schedule also changes from day to day, but there are meal packages offered daily for pick-up, with the proceeds used to fund community projects and charitable causes.
I was there for a comforting lunch of lentil soup, brown bread, and salad.
Plant-based meals are as diverse and creative as Baltimore’s restaurant scene. Whether you want a fresh-pressed juice, Neapolitan-style pizza, or a plate of ribs and mac n cheese.
