With various boutiques and vintage shops, the East Village is a fun place to live and visit. Tompkins Square Park is in the middle of the neighborhood and is a lovely communal space. Many movies have scenes that were shot in the East Village, including renowned films like Taxi Driver and the Godfather.

In 1984, Hasaki began serving sashimi and Edomae-style sushi. The restaurant is located in the Ukrainian Village community and holds natural wood decor for a comfortable yet elevated dining experience. Hasaki is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner. The restaurant also boasts an outdoor zen garden that is serene.

When I visited the restaurant, I enjoyed the Agedashi Tofu appetizer, a deep-fried tofu dish with grated daikon. I ordered the Bluefin Tekka Don, bluefin tuna sashimi on a bed of sushi rice, for an entree. The mixed seaweed salad and the miso soup are also delicious additions to your meal.


Takahachi

Takahachi has been serving traditional Japanese favorites and sushi for more than thirty years. Located just one block from Tompkins Square Park, Takahachi brings to life the vibes of a local neighborhood joint that residents and guests alike will keep coming back to visit. The restaurant is open daily for dinner beginning at 4:00 pm.

I enjoyed the seabass dumpling with ponzu to begin my meal. I ordered other incredible dishes like the Orange Roll with salmon, avocado, cucumber, and spicy mayo and the East village Roll with shrimp tempura, eel, and avocado. Other popular menu items include the spider roll and the Boston roll.


Kanoyama

Kanoyama has received awards from both Zagat and Michelin. The restaurant is open daily, beginning at 5:30 pm. Kanoyama is located across from St. Marks Church-in-the-Bowery and is just steps from the Village East by Angelika movie theatre. Sushi is available for dine-in, takeout, or delivery.

The restaurant is known for its fresh sushi, but it also serves hot items like Salmon or Chicken Teriyaki. My favorite sushi rolls at Kanoyama include the Spider Roll with soft shell crab, the Salmon Skin Roll, and the Rainbow Roll with Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Whitefish, and Avocado. The Mochi Ice Cream is also delicious!


Cagen

Located in the heart of the East Village, Cagen serves Edomae sushi using the freshest ingredients. Chef-owner Tomita uses traditional techniques and is influenced by modernism; he sources rare fish directly from Japan. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday between 6:30 pm and 8 pm for guests with reservations.

Dining is a cultivated experience crafted by the chef, so no traditional menu is necessary. The experience offers an omakase menu with twelve pieces of sushi and one hand roll made from seasonal fish. The restaurant can accommodate dietary restrictions from a shellfish allergy to gluten-free to kosher.


Sushi by M

Sushi by M is located on East 5th Street in the middle of the Ukrainian Village. The restaurant offers diners the classic omakase experience. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. Reservations can be made online for sushi bar seating, so visitors can watch the chef prepare sushi in front of them.

The Wagyu Beef and the yellowtail hand rolls are delicious, but the unique chef’s creation menu is incredible! From scallop to sea urchin to spotted prawn, the chef offers delicious, specialty bites to visitors. Try the Big Mac, Cheeseburger, or Golden Ducky, all of which are unique creations from the chef at Sushi by M.


Beron Beron

Beron Beron is a modern Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu. Guests can take in the whole vibe of the restaurant by requesting seating on floor mats. The restaurant is located near the East Side Community High School. It is open for lunch and dinner and offers takeout and dine-in options.

When I visited, I first noticed the traditional lanterns decorating the exterior of the building. The menu is filled with tasty options; my favorite was the Whitefish Tempura and the Red Dragon Roll with tuna and eel sauce. Other popular items include the Snow Crab California Roll and the Spicy Codfish Roe Roll.


SenYa

SenYa is a contemporary fashion Japanese restaurant. SenYa is open between Tuesday and Sunday for dinner. The restaurant is located in the heart of the Ukrainian Village community, and has grown to be a local favorite. The interior is sleek with distinct lines and cleanly situated tables. Reservations are available online.

The restaurant’s special rolls are delicious. Try the Shrimp & Eel with shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with eel and deep-fried gobo. I also enjoyed the Ocean Trout Pressed Sushi and the Uni Risotto. Don’t forget to try the sake flight with three different types of delicious sake. 


Kura

Kura is located across from Tompkins Square Park and is an understated Japanese hole-in-the-wall serving refined omakase sushi. The vibe of the restaurant is pleasant and unhurried. Kura is open Monday through Saturday from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm. I recommend making plans to enjoy your meal for about an hour and a half.

My favorite menu items were the O-toro nigiri and the chu-toro maki. Try the White Tuna Sashimi with miso wasabi sauce or the Vegetable Gyoza. Notably, the restaurant offers many vegetarian options like the Avocado Roll and the House Vegetable Roll. The restaurant’s selection of beer and sake is very good as well.


Kikoo Sushi

Kikoo is an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant located directly across from the M15 bus stop in the center of the East Village. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays but offers lunch and dinner other days of the week. Definitely make plans for this dining experience to be your one big meal of the day.

Kikoo Sushi offers a standard price for dinner or dinner with drinks; then, guests can enjoy or try as many pieces of sushi as they would like. I enjoyed the Fried pork gyoza, the Salmon Avocado Hand Roll, and the Yellowtail Scallion Roll. Other popular menu items include the chicken teriyaki bowl with white rice and the Seafood Miso Soup.


Kissaki Sushi

Kissaki Sushi serves traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant serves omakase sushi and kaiseki dishes. Executive Chef Mark Garcia creates comforting dishes for guests of the restaurants. The Specialty Nigiri Flight is a neat experience with six pieces of chef’s specialty nigiri.

Donburi is a sushi rice bowl that is so delicious with a chef’s selection of cubed sashimi with Tamago, cucumber, and uni. I enjoyed the Seared Shishito Peppers and the Seared Wagyu and Uni Nigiri. The akami and avocado crudo is a refreshing dish that I would recommend. The restaurant is an East Village staple.


Kotobuki Manhattan

Kotobuki Manhattan is a sashimi-focused restaurant with other creative rolls on the menu. The modern space cultivates a unique vibe for guests. The exterior of the restaurant is a beautifully aged wood front. Kotobuki Manhattan is within walking distance from the Astor Place metro stop.

I enjoyed the Spicy Girl Roll with spicy salmon, spicy yellowtail, avocado, and topped with spicy tuna and tempura flakes. Other popular menu items include the Grinch Roll with spicy tuna, yellowtail, tempura flakes, avocado, and cayenne pepper, and the steamed dumplings with a vinegar soy sauce. And if you still have room, I recommend you try the banana tempura for dessert!


Sushi Dojo

Sushi Dojo serves seasonal Japanese cuisine. The restaurant has a sixteen-seat counter bar where guests can observe sushi preparation and experience a unique connection with the chef. Sushi Dojo is named after a traditional “dojo,” or a place to train. The restaurant is open between 5:00 pm and 12:00 am daily.

The pork or duck buns are great options for an appetizer. The King Salmon and Spicy Tuna rolls are even more great options to consider. Other popular menu items include the cucumber avocado roll, the Firecracker roll, and the Alaskan roll. Don’t skip the Chicken Shiitake Gyoza; it’s one of my favorite menu items!


Shinn East

Shinn East is a sushi restaurant that is operated by one of the youngest chefs in the city. The restaurant offers intimate seating in a warm and comfortable atmosphere. Shinn East is open from Tuesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is located along Tompkins Square Park.

Shinn East serves omakase-style sushi at one of the best prices in the city. For twelve pieces and one hand roll, the cost is sixty-five dollars per person. You can make reservations for the dining experience online. I had a wonderful time and meal at Shinn East.


Kimura

Since 1985, Kimura has served Japanese Hot Pots and sushi on Saint Marks Place in the East Village. You can make reservations online. The restaurant is open Monday through Sunday from 11:30 am to 10:00 pm. Kimura is one of my favorite spots in the city for the food and for the ambiance.

Start your meal with fried oysters and chicken wings. Then I would recommend ordering the yellowtail sashimi, the spicy scallop roll, and the spicy crunchy salmon roll. Other popular menu items include the Philadelphia roll and the shrimp tempura roll. The yellowtail scallion roll is so delicious!


Benemon

Benemon is an exciting restaurant in the city! This restaurant offers cool vibes with modern decor. The restaurant is open for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday for dinner.

Specializing in Japanese comfort food, Benemon is the best place for both sushi and tempura dishes. The restaurant is located between the Ukrainian Village and the Bowery in the East Village. 

The menu is full of delicious items. Try the Tofu Fire appetizer, lightly batter-fried tofu, sweet chili sauce, and topped with scallions. The menu includes various Donburi bowls. Other popular menu items include the Tuna Tataki, the Edamame pepperoncini, and the beef curry.
