Where to Get Fresh Seafood in Detroit

Seafood restaurants around the city that you have to try.

Detroit, also known as Motor City, is globally recognized as the original birthplace of the modern automobile. Visitors often want to visit the Henry Ford Experience exhibit during their stay in Detroit. Other attractions draw people to the city, such as the nightlife, music, art, and of course, the sports scene. 

One thing you may not know Detroit for is their seafood. A handful of restaurants in the city rival even some of the most well-known establishments in the country. When I look for good seafood, I think succulent crab and lobster, jumbo shrimp, and flakey fish, just to name a few things. 

Aside from that, the food should be fresh and the menu diverse. Well, I found just that in the heart of Detroit. If you want mouthwatering seafood, check out my list of the best restaurants in Detroit!

Streetside Seafood

Located about 20 minutes from Detroit, you can find Streetside Seafood by the corner of Pierce and E Merrill St. This neighborhood favorite has a jovial atmosphere. The focal point is fresh and succulent seafood dishes all year round. The decor is simple, with textured brick, a copper bar, and fish-themed artwork hanging on the walls. It’s a cozy space that draws in crowds from near and far. 

The unique culinary dishes at Streetfood Seaside can be classified as classic with a modern twist. They have daily specials and an award-winning wine selection. There’s often soft music playing in the background to tie everything together for an overall pleasant experience. 

My favorite dishes were the Jerk-Spiced Fish Tacos, Lobster Bisque, and the Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes. I highly recommend you stop by if you’re in the area!


Joe Muer Seafood

Joe Muer Seafood restaurant exudes fine dining at the highest level. Situated inside 

The GM Renaissance Center, Joe Muer’s serves top-quality seafood in a sophisticated atmosphere that focuses on excellence. The decor is inspired by a midcentury 1960s modern era with contemporary style and design. 

The beautiful views of the Detroit River coupled with the exquisite service have won JM’s multiple awards for the Best Seafood Restaurant in Detroit. They have a Raw Bar and a Sushi Bar, as well as a lounge area where you can enjoy unique cocktails and drinks. The portion sizes are more than generous, and the service is nothing short of exceptional. 

The reviews rave about the Grilled Atlantic Swordfish, Shrimp Diablo, and the Crab Stuffed Atlantic Flounder. Joe Muer’s is by far my favorite restaurant on this list- everything is fresh, well-seasoned, and delicious. 


Sindbad’s Restaurant and Marina

You can find Sindbad’s in Kean’s Marina along the Detroit River. They have a nautical theme and live music which makes the atmosphere upbeat and fun. They serve seafood and other American classics such as burgers and steaks. Sindbad’s also has a varied drink selection. One of my favorite aspects of this restaurant is their Sunday brunch. 

Additionally, it’s a great spot to set up shop and park your boat, catch fish, and stay for lunch. They’ll even cook the fish you catch if you clean it first. Customer Appreciation Happy Hour is each weekday from 3p-6p, with discounted appetizers and drinks. Popular dishes include Frog Legs, Rock Lobster Tails, Mussels, and Fried Calamari. 


Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips

Scotty Simpson’s Fish & Chips is an oldie but goodie. It’s near the corner of Fenkell Ave and Dolphin St, and it’s unassuming from the outside. Nothing too fancy- vinyl and wooden chairs, patterned carpet, and the vibes are casual. The food, however, is mouthwatering, to say the least. 

Scotty’s is known by locals for their famous fish n’ chips, but they have crispy, juicy fried chicken and burgers as well. The wait staff was very friendly and engaging, and the food was hot and fresh. I recommend the Lake Perch, Shrimp, and Cod with Chips or Scotty’s Famous Fish Sandwich. Guests have stated that the Frog Legs were surprisingly good as well.

Mink Detroit

Mink Detroit is a gem of a restaurant that you can find located in the Corktown neighborhood near the Corner Ballpark. Mink has emerged as a community gathering place; moreover, it has a cozy and casual atmosphere with modern furnishings and decor which adds to the overall aesthetics.

If you ever have a craving for an exciting raw bar Mink Detroit is the place to be. What’s more, Mink is more than just a raw bar, they also have a seasonal menu that’s rotating constantly which adds lots of variety. Stop by Mink Detroit, try one of their delicious Lobster Rolls, and eat to your heart’s content with their Seafood Smorgasbord!


The Sardine Room

Located directly across the street from Kellogg Park in Plymouth, The Sardine Room is where you want to be if you enjoy good eats, good drinks, and a good time! This stylish bistro receives much attention for its raw bar bites and craft cocktails served up in a hip and modern space.

The food here is influenced by the coastal cuisine of the Southern United States. Here is where you can count on getting authentic cuisine at affordable prices. The bar program is noteworthy, to say the least, featuring well-made cocktails with quality spirits. 

Besides that excellent raw bar and wine selection, try the delectable Wild Gold Shrimp and Grits or the awesome Perch Sliders if you visit. 


Steve & Rocky’s Restaurant

You can find Steve’s & Rocky’s Restaurant nestled between Ann Arbor and West Bloomfield in Novi Town Center. This restaurant, which is a local favorite, draws customers from miles away thanks to their outstanding local and regional finfish and their variety of fresh seafood, shellfish, and fresh fish from all over the world. 

The atmosphere is very rustic, and it encourages everyone to dress casual or formal—there are no limits. The staff is memorable as they do not hesitate to offer you suggestions such as the tasty Braised Short Ribs or the rich and tender Filet Mignon. Locals also recommend that you try their delightful Creme Brulee before you leave. 


Fishbones

Quaintly named, Fishbones is located in Greektown, which is in downtown Detroit. This is a local chain that has French Quarter vibes for New Orleans-style Cajun fare. Fishbones also serves quality steak and Seafood. The interior design is simple and rustic, with many TVs here and there and some good music playing in the background as well.

Fishbones have an authentic southern bayou menu with large portion sizes and a varied seafood selection. Notably, the service is always good, and the place has a stellar sushi bar. Moreover, their spicy calamari and Catfish Beignets are standouts and something you should try on your stop to Fishbones.


Final Thoughts

Excellent-quality seafood is the focal point of all of these Detroit restaurants. I’m confident that you won’t be disappointed if you choose to visit any (or all) of the restaurants on this list!
