Atlanta is an iconic southern metropolis on so many levels. As Georgia’s capital city, Atlanta has played crucial roles in the civil rights movement, starting with the Civil War.

Today Atlanta is home to a colorful urban scene rooted in Black and Southern culture.

After a day full of historical sightseeing around downtown, you can get a taste of a lively restaurant and bar scene and experience Atlanta’s current urban scene.

The best way to take in Atlanta’s urban cityscape is atop a rooftop bar, so I’ve come up with a list of the best rooftop bars in Atlanta for you to add to your itinerary.

Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House is a casual, family-friendly seafood restaurant in Atlanta’s Westside neighborhood.

They use the freshest catches from around the globe to create a high-quality menu with flavors from various culinary traditions.

The interior is a sports bar atmosphere that opens onto a great rooftop patio with great sunset views. If you’re going with a crowd, I recommend the Steamer platter, with crab legs, oysters, shrimp, mussels, sausage, corn, new potatoes, and jalapeño hush puppies.


St. Julep

Located in Atlanta’s trendy Buckhead neighborhood, St. Julep is the newest addition to the colorful Kimpton Sylvan Hotel.

St. Julep is a beautiful indoor-outdoor lounge with mid-century modern décor, creative cocktails, and elevated bar snacks.

St. Julep’s cocktail menu is a high-quality take on classics like margaritas and Manhattans, but their bar snacks menu is as unique as they come. I loved their spiked soft serve and mini corn dogs.


Gypsy Kitchen ATL

Another Buckhead neighborhood favorite, Gypsy Kitchen is a tapas bar and Iberian-inspired bistro, serving authentic Spanish dishes.

The gorgeous interior is a high-ceilinged industrial-chic masterpiece centered around a giant bull sculpture in honor of Spanish traditions.

Their cocktail menu is as authentic as the tapas served alongside it, with classics like Sangria to accompany a savory plate of patatas bravas and other classic Spanish foods.

I enjoyed their great weekday happy hour menu with a house-curated tonic and spiced chicken strips with almond romesco sauce.


Clermont Hotel and Rooftop Bar

The Clermont Hotel is a hip Midtown boutique hotel with praise from Culture Trip as one of Atlanta’s best.

It’s a fun rooftop bar, covered in Astroturf and old-school wicker chairs have garnered praise from Thrillist as one of the Best Bars in Atlanta

The giant rooftop has various food carts for snacks and casual meals from sunset to late at night. For a refreshing drink on a summer’s night, I recommend the Clermont Daiquiri with rum, hibiscus, and lime juice.


Drawbar

Located inside the Bellyard Hotel in West Midtown, Drawbar is a high-end bistro and cocktail bar specializing in Atlanta-style southern cuisine.

It’s classy and iconic, with each drink and dish representative of Atlanta’s history. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, late-night cocktails, and even a fantastic brunch menu.

You can come for an Atlanta history lesson at any hour. I went for brunch to sample their incredibly light and fluffy buttermilk biscuits with black pepper gravy.

Located in Bazati, a bright and airy Mexican and Latin American food restaurant and cocktail bar in the Old Fourth Ward overlooking Poncey Highland’s Freedom Park.

Estrella, meaning “star” in Spanish, has spectacular views of Highland-Poncey’s greenery by day and the star-studded sky by night.

Estrella’s menu changes seasonally with a robust cocktail menu that serves classic drinks from around Latin America, like margaritas and pisco sours.

I had a top-shelf margarita to accompany authentic Mexican street tacos, my favorite being their pork carnitas.


O-Ku

O-Ku is a high-end modern Japanese bistro and cocktail bar in West Midtown, with an industrial-chic interior, and a sleek, modern outdoor lounge with low-to-the-ground tables and cushioned couches.

Japanese native Head Chef Masatomo Hamaya creates a unique blend of traditional and innovative Japanese sushi, hot plates, and cocktails.

I opted out of the traditional sake or Sapporo for their delicious Froze with grapefruit rum, Rossi brut rose, peach nectar, and lemonade.


RT60

Overlooking the Downtown skyline and the Mercedes Benz Stadium, RT60 is a fancy, uber-modern rooftop lounge at the Reverb Hotel by Hard Rock.

In keeping with the Hard Rock hotel’s musician theme, there are nightly live music line-ups to serenade your cocktails and small bites.

Their cocktails and bar fare are a cut above the rest, with a massive variety of classic favorites. I ordered from the Moscow mule menu and savored a rich Spiced Mule with bourbon and vanilla, garnished with cinnamon and lemon peel.


SkyLounge

SkyLounge is the iconic Glenn Hotel’s award-winning rooftop lounge, voted by Forbes Travel Guide and abc.com as one of the Best Rooftops in Atlanta and the world.

The décor is a modern take on classic Southern, while the views of downtown and Centennial Park over which it lies are unparalleled.

SkyLounge has creative high-end cocktails and a small menu of snacks to savor while you gaze out over Atlanta.

In honor of Atlanta’s most iconic downtown park, I chose the Centennial Cocktail with vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry, and pineapple.


Whiskey Blue

Located atop Hotel Colee in Buckhead Village, Whisky Blue is a high-end, modern, and romantic rooftop bar with a luxurious indoor lounge.

Featured in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Food and Beverage, Whiskey Blue is a wonderful destination for classic, high-quality cocktails with 360-degree views of the city.

While they offer classic cocktails, Whiskey Blue also has an inventive menu of house cocktails. I recommend the refreshing Under the Volcano cocktail with mezcal, jalapeño sweetener, lime juice, angostura bitters, and fresh mint.


9 Mile Station

9 Mile Station is a clean, modern indoor-outdoor bar and restaurant on the top of Atlanta’s Ponce City Market, offering family-friendly drinks and dinner and adult-only cocktail and lounge hours after 10 pm.

They have a minimalist outdoor patio with fire pits to enjoy the unfettered downtown skyline views by the fire.

They now offer weekend boozy brunches, with phenomenal cocktails. I had the My Best Life, a fun rum drink with lime, elderflower, apricot, grapefruit, and rose. It went great with a creative plate of pastrami benedict.


Fadó Irish Pub (Buckhead)

Fadó Irish Pub in Buckhead Village has been a neighborhood fixture for nearly 30 years. They’re a friendly sports bar, family brunch spot, happy hour meeting place, and live music venue in one historic pub.

They specialize in Irish pub fare, cocktails, and draft beers. I had a rich and stout pint of Guinness with some of the best fish and chips I’ve had outside of the UK. If you’re not a fish fan, try the authentic corned beef and cabbage.


Grana

Located in Piedmont Heights, Grana is a classy yet inviting Italian bistro, specializing in Neapolitan cuisine.

Chef and owner Pat Pascarella uses old family recipes from his immigrant family to create the most authentic offering of wood-fired pizzas, pasta, antipasti, and entrees.

The romantic rooftop lounge is a great place to enjoy antipasti and cocktails before the meal. In my opinion, they make the best meatballs in town. I especially loved the Brasstown Beef with gouda, red onion, and black truffle jam.


Hobnob Atlantic Station

Hobnob has various locations around Atlanta, but the Atlantic Station location has a great rooftop patio with amazing views of Piedmont Park and downtown Atlanta.

Hobnob is a neighborhood tavern, serving American comfort food with a Southern twist. They offer every comfort food imaginable, from chicken pot pie to shrimp and grits.

They’re famous for their burgers, so I had to try the Wise Guy Burger with caramelized onions, bacon jam, bacon strips, and cheddar.


Republic Social House

A Grant Park neighborhood staple, Republic Social House is a casual gastropub with a large rooftop patio overlooking Oakland Cemetery.

The local vibe and great beer selection are a favorite for happy hour get-togethers. They have daily drink and food specials for the lunch hour.

I went on Thursday to catch their beer and shots special, starting the weekend early with a cheap combo of Miller Highlife and a shot of Jameson.


Rowdy Tiger Whiskey Bar & Kitchen

Located in the heart of Midtown Atlanta, Rowdy Tiger Whiskey Bar & Kitchen is a prohibition-era-style bar and refined Southern comfort food kitchen in a funky, colorful, and edgy space.

The rooftop assumes a homey design, with different regions dedicated to different rooms in a typical home.

They have one of the more extensive whiskey menus in town, not to mention a full cocktail, wine, and beer menu.

They also have my favorite rendition of deviled eggs, which they top with braised short rib and pickled radish.


STATS Brewpub

Sandwiched between Georgia World Congress Center and Centennial Park, STATS Brewpub is a casual sports bar, brewery, and gastropub in a giant multi-story complex with a large, covered rooftop.

The atmosphere is lively and bustling, with multiple TVs for watching your favorite games before heading to the outdoor patio for a lively chat.

They have 9 proprietary beers on tap, plus 9 domestic tap beers, not to mention an affordable cocktail menu. I recommend their Cowabunga Sour Ale that they ferment with prickly pear fruit and pink guava.


Final Thoughts

Atlanta’s diverse urban cityscape has plenty of rooftop bars to take in views over a delicious cocktail, snack, or meal.
