San Francisco is a hotspot for excellent pizza. West Coast pizza has its unique history and is entirely distinct from New York pie or Chicago deep-dish pizza. On the other hand, California pizza is identifiable by its thin crust and traditionally fresh California toppings.
The list of the best pizza spots in San Francisco highlights many places that serve California-style pizzas, but don’t worry, and you can find a deep-dish pie or a jumbo slice in the city!

Little Star Pizza
Little Star Pizza is open every day for lunch and later on the weekends. Located on Valencia Street near the Mission, Little Star Pizza offers both deep-dish and thin-crust pizza. The Mission is a trendy neighborhood in San Fran with a young, hip vibe filled with attractive storefronts and unique restaurants.
The classic deep dish pizza has sausage, mushrooms, onions, and green peppers, but the “All-Star” is a must-try – it includes bacon, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, and provolone cheese.
If you are interested in a thin crust pizza, try the California pizza with a pesto base and arugula or the White Pie that uses garlic-infused olive oil. Add a glass of wine – the Skylark Blend from Sonoma or the Vincent Chardonnay – to round out your meal.
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana
1570 Stockton St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Tony Gemignani is the namesake for Tony’s Pizza Napoletana. He learned to craft delicious Italian-style pizza after a small pizzeria inspired him in Napoli.
For a full-circle moment, Tony won Best Pizza Margherita at the World Pizza Cup in Naples, Italy, in 2011. The full menu is more robust and diverse than only pizzas, and everything is incredible.
I’d recommend starting your meal with the fried ricotta-stuffed squash blossoms or the Peroni-battered fried artichokes. Then, dive into some pizza.
Try the California-style “Honey Pie” honey, calabrese peppers, scallions, mozzarella, fried caramelized onions, and serrano peppers. Or, the Italian-style “Diavola” with hot red pepper oil, soppressata Picante, arugula, mozzarella, and Parmigiano. You won’t regret either!
Pizzeria Delfina is unique to San Francisco, but it offers multiple locations near the Mission, Palo Alto, and Pacific Heights. Their pizzas are inspired by traditional New York pizza with influences of the Italian style.
Chef owners of the restaurant, Annie and Craig Stoll, use farm-to-table ingredients for fresh, unique pizzas.
I tried the Salsiccia, a red sauce pizza with house-made fennel sausage, tomato, sweet peppers, onions, and mozzarella, and it was terrific. Also try the Prosciutto Pie, a white sauced pie with Prosciutto di Parma, caciocavallo, mozzarella, panna, and arugula.
If you want to add a side dish or dessert, try the crostini with homemade tomato sauce and the buttermilk panna cotta.
855 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94108
Del Popolo originated as a mobile pizzeria serving Neapolitan-style pizza from a shipping container, but six years ago, the restaurant made a move to a brick-and-mortar shop. The pizza is prepared in a wood fire oven for a distinct taste.
There is a ninety-minute requested time limit for dining inside the restaurant, plenty of time to enjoy your pizza and wine.
For a starter, try the Panzanella, a traditional bread salad made with tomatoes and melon-jalapeño vinaigrette is a must-have! The Neapolitan-style pizza is a soft dough with fire blistering.
I also recommend you try the spicy coppa with arugula pesto, garlic cream, pickled onions, and cherry tomatoes, or the roasted maitake mushroom pizza with spinach, garlic, and cacio e pepe.
826 Folsom St, San Francisco, CA 94107
Zero Zero serves pizza in a family-style setting and supports local farmers by using fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant is open from Tuesday to Saturday for dinner. You can also take Zero Zero’s pizza home from the frozen aisle at Luke’s Local, Woodlands Market, or Four Star Seafood.
The Margherita is the most popular pizza, and for good reason, it was one of my favorites.
Other menu hits include the Fillmore with Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, leeks, mozzarella, pecorino, and fontina cheese; the Castro with sausage, soppressata, mozzarella, and basil; and the Golden Gate with grilled pineapple, calabrese sausage, pickled red onion, and mozzarella.
Finish your meal with a swirl of soft-serve ice cream!
641 Vallejo St., San Francisco, CA 94133
Capo’s serves Detroit-style and Chicago-style pizzas with thick crusts and fresh fillings. Every deep dish pizza crust is prepared with flour from Ceresota, a historic grain mill in Chicago. The restaurant is open between Wednesday and Sunday for dinner.
Capo’s is known for their house-made Calabrese sausage, which guests can order as an appetizer with a side of honey or as a pizza topping.
The pizzas are the main event at Capo’s, so try the “Old Chicago” toppings of Italian sausage, meatball, garlic, and ricotta, in any of the following styles: Detroit, thin, deep dish, cast iron pan, or stuffed!
The Deville, Motorhead, and Detroit Rock City are other popular topping combinations. In true Chicago-esque fashion, Capo’s also serves an Italian Beef Sandwich that is fantastic!
1199 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110
Located in the Mission District, Beretta has been serving up quality pizza for more than a decade. Offering contemporary Italian comfort foods and thin-crust pizza, the restaurant is popular with residents and visitors alike.
Notably, if you want a pizza for breakfast, this is the place to go for weekend brunch!
On the brunch menu are some ingenious items like the eggs Purgatorio in spicy tomato sauce with hot salami or the carbonara pizza with mozzarella, parmesan, provolone, bacon, eggs, and cracked black pepper.
I would recommend the spicy marinara pizza or the funghi misti pizza with portobello and crimini mushrooms for dinner. Other main dishes include lamb shank and chicken parmigiana.
Fiorella serves pizza, fresh pasta, and gelato; for an authentic Italian experience, visit one of their three locations.
The restaurant is open daily for dinner with longer hours on Friday and Saturday. To create a community restaurant in a local space, Fiorella makes Italian food welcoming in San Francisco.
The menu offers vegetarian options like the burrata pie with a whole ball of lioni burrata on top and vegan choices like the marinara pie with tomatoes, garlic, and extra virgin olive oil.
Other highly rated choices on the pizza menu are the heirloom tomato pie and the marinated pepper pie.
If you are in the mood for fresh pasta, which I nearly always am, the bucatini Pomodoro or the bolognese rigatoni are excellent choices – and all of the pasta can be made gluten-free!
2355 Chestnut St, San Francisco, CA 94123
A16 is great for a casual weekday date night dinner or a traveler visiting San Francisco and wanting to dine alone at the bar. The restaurant is welcoming, and the food is tasty. Pizza paired with a beer or cocktail elevates the overall experience.
For an appetizer, I started with the burrata and the calamari, both of which are perfect. Then, moving to the main course, try the classic pepperoni or the Arrabbiata with pancetta, fior di latte, red onion, and Calabrian chili.
For takeout, the restaurant offers a deal – the Bottle & Box – where you can select your choice of pizza and a bottle of red wine for a pizza night at home.
Golden Boy Pizza
542 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Golden Boy Pizza is located in North Beach and is open every day from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Opened in 1978, this pizzeria has been slinging dough for more than forty years!
The pizza is served square, and visitors can order by the slice or by the pan. Peter Sodini founded Golden Boy Pizza, and now his sons have inherited the business.
While the traditional pepperoni is a best-seller, give the Clam and Garlic a try, it is covered with baby clams and chopped garlic. It’s not like anything I’ve tasted before.
Another delicious selection is the Combo, which is loaded with pepperoni, sausage, onion, mushroom, zucchini, and tomato.
211 23rd Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121
Pizzetta 211 is a busy restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner every day except Tuesday. With a rotating menu and desserts made in-house, this pizzeria is a must-try! Pizzetta 211 does not take reservations and is often busy, but settle in because the pies are worth the wait.
A few items on the menu rotate seasonally, but many options are available year-round. One of the regular bestsellers is a California-style pizza with spicy San Marzano tomato sauce, mascarpone, and arugula.
One example of a seasonal item is the “loaded potato” pizza with bacon, potato, chive, creme fraiche, and cheddar – comforting and delicious!
3299 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110
The PizzaHacker started as a mobile service restaurant with the founder operating a grill to prepare the signature thin-crust pizzas. The restaurant is connected to another breakfast location, the BagelMacher. I enjoyed this spot!
The Over the Top pie literally has a whole burrata on top alongside Over the Top fresh basil and savory olive oil.
Another option is the Rocket Man, which will definitely send you into outer space; toppings include arugula, garlic, fresh mozzarella, an egg, lemon juice, and chili paste.
Yo Vinny! and Get A Room are two other popular pies on the menu.
2842 Diamond St, San Francisco, CA 94131
Gialina Pizzeria is named for the chef and owner’s grandmother. The owner, Sharon Ardiana, has over forty years of experience in kitchens, but having grown up in an Italian family, she was drawn to preparing pizzas and pastas.
Ardiana’s specialty is Neapolitan-style pizzas made with fresh, local ingredients.
Order the four cheese pizza or one of the signature seasonal pies, like the BLT with tomatoes, applewood smoked bacon, mozzarella, basil, and arugula.
Additionally, it is definitely worth ordering a pasta dish as well – try the ricotta cavatelli with brown butter, sage, and lemon zest.
Cellarmaker House of Pizza
3193 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110
The House of Pizza is connected to the Cellarmaker brewery, so it’s a perfect spot for a slice of pie and a brew!
They offer Detroit-style pizzas, deep-dish pies that serve the sauce on top of the other toppings; it is deliciously saucy. My recommendation is to grab a handful of napkins before you dig in!
The Cellarmaker House of Pizza Detroit-style pizza serves one to two people – try the Carnivore’s Delight with pepperoni, pork belly, and house-made sausage.
If you are looking for something lighter, try the Zucchini & Squash with mozzarella, red onion, and yuza ricotta. Notably, the brewery has hard seltzers, IPAs, pale ales, and a stout to pair with your pizza.
Flour + Water
2401 Harrison St, San Francisco, CA 94110
The two primary components of the pizza dough – Flour + Water – is this restaurant’s name. The Executive Chef, Thomas McNaughton, fuses regional cuisine from Italy and Northern California.
The restaurant offers cooking classes, private dining, and guests can even purchase a cookbook created by the restaurant.
For dinner, try the salsiccia pizza with pork sausage, eggplant, ricotta, and pickled Padron. Pizza is not the only item on the menu; the basil & corn cappelletti is a pasta dish with squash and pesto.
Flour + Water also sells wine by the glass or bottle. The dessert list is also incredible, the citrus marigold panna cotta is unique and delicious.
Tommaso’s Ristorante Italiano
1042 Kearny St, San Francisco, CA 94133
Tommaso’s Ristorante Italiano opened in 1935 with the first wood-fired oven in the Bay Area. The Cantalupo family, originally from Naples, founded the restaurant in North Beach. Decades later, they passed along their family traditions to the Crotti family, who now own and operate the restaurant.
The pizza options are vast and various, and the restaurant offers plenty of vegetarian options for visitors. Try the arugula and shaved parmesan pizza or the chicken breast and artichoke heart pie.
The restaurant also offers calzones, a folded pizza with toppings stuffed inside – try it filled with mushrooms and sausage! The calzone was an unexpected but delicious treat.

Arizmendi Bakery is a worker-owned cooperative restaurant. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner six days a week – closed Monday.
The menu rotates regularly, and all of the loaves of bread and pastries are made in-house and are available until sold out. Because the group is an expert at bread making, they naturally tried to add sauce and cheese on top to make pizzas!
The pizzas are one flavor a day, and it changes every week – what is reward without risk! Visiting the bakery for lunch or dinner is a fun way to try locally crafted cuisine.
However, you can visit the restaurant’s social media pages for a heads up on the day’s toppings. Be sure to grab a loaf of bread while you are there.

Montesacro Pinseria is named for a historic working-class neighborhood in Rome. The restaurant aims to honor those who survived post-WWII in poverty in Rome.
Aiming to be a neighborhood hub for superb wines and delicious foods, it simultaneously has embraced its Roman roots, from its name to its vibe to its ingredients.
Try the uniquely crafted Garbatella with caper mayonnaise, tuna, buffalo mozzarella, hot chili, and pickled red onion, or try something a bit more familiar like the marenella or the margherita.
Pair your pizza with a glass of wine – the 2017 Monastrell Tinto or the 2017 Cannonau Rosato. To finish your meal, try the dessert pizza with cream and pistachios!
The Pizza Place on Noriega
3901 Noriega St, San Francisco, CA 94122
David Ashin and Kevin Baryza are friends and the founders of The Pizza Place on Noriega. The two friends worked together at a pizzeria in high school, then moved together to California to study culinary arts.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner most days but is closed all day on Tuesday.
All pies are available in fourteen or twenty inches – I ordered the fourteen-inch, and it was perfect for a couple of people. Try the Sunset Aloha with coppacola, pineapple, and feta if you like pineapple on your pizza.
For meat lovers, try the Meathead with pepperoni, sausage, ham, and salami. Other favorites include the Big Wave Dave and Timmie’s Pie, which is vegan. The pizzeria also offers all of their pizzas on gluten-free crust.
Square Pie Guys
1077 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94103
The Square Pie Guys are bringing Detroit-style pizza to San Francisco with flair. Their 8×10 pizzas are enough for one or two people so that a group can try a few different toppings.
The pizzeria also offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options! Square Pie Guys restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner.
Try the “The Liz” with ricotta cream and roasted garlic oil or the “Spicy Ellen” with vodka sauce and spicy sausage. The cheese pie and the 6×8 (their pepperoni pie) are both popular items.
Also, try the cheesy bread with red sauce and the crispy California Brussel’s sprouts. The pizzeria sells goods from other local shops – like Double Rainbow Ice Cream and a hazy IPA from SF BrewCo.
One location of Delarosa is in San Francisco’s Marina District, located very near the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of Fine Arts. It is a casual neighborhood pizza shop serving Roman-style pizza and Californian wines.
Another location is between FiDi and SoMa, so no matter where you are in San Francisco, you’ll be able to find Delarosa!
The combinations for pizza toppings are outstanding. Try the spicy marinara, calabrese chilies, and olives or the spicy fennel sausage, mozzarella, and onion, but don’t forget to take advantage of the “add-ons.”
You can add any of the following to any pizza: burrata, spicy coppa, calabrese peppers, anchovy, prosciutto, and many others!
Gioia Pizzeria Hayes Valley
579 Hayes St, San Francisco, CA 94102
Gioia serves New York-style pizza using fresh, seasonal ingredients. In addition to the pizza, the restaurant offers house-made beef and pork meatballs, chicken parmesan, and house-made cannolis. In 2017, Gioia made the Michelin Guide for San Francisco.
The Julian is a popular pizza with calabrese sausage, kale, and chili flakes. The Pomodoro is another often ordered pie made with Early Girl tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella.
The Formaggio and the Funghi pizzas are menu staples. For a side dish, add on the garlic knots with a side of marinara.

Casey’s Pizza is open for dinner between Wednesday and Sunday. The vibe here is casual and relaxing; it is a hip spot.
The restaurant offers outdoor seating, so take advantage of a lovely California night by ordering a pizza from Casey’s. With take-out and delivery options, you can also enjoy a Casey’s Pizza from the comfort of your home.
The margherita, pepperoni, and funghi pies are very popular, but try one of the signature offerings like the Popeye, which is topped with roasted spinach, red onion, mozzarella, goat cheese, and balsamic.
Notably, nearly every beet offered on the menu is regional, with breweries located in California.

Ron Demirdjian co-founded Arinell Pizza in 1975. Demirdjian learned how to make incredible pizza from an Italian chef growing up in Manhattan, New York. After moving to California, he brought East Coast pizza to the West. The restaurant is open every day for lunch and dinner.
If you ask for a recommendation, Chef Demirdjian will likely tell you to order the cheese – it is his pride and favorite.
The menu is a simple list of toppings so that you can express your pizza creativity. Some toppings include pepperoni, onion, pineapple, sausage, peppers, anchovy, and mushroom.

Za Pizza is a neighborhood staple in the Russian Hill community, and it has been named a Visitor’s Choice winner by Trip Advisor for years. The pizzeria is open every day from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm. If you are walking by, stop in for one of their daily slice specials.
The menu is filled with Za Pizza specialties, like the Vincent Van Dough with Roma tomatoes, fresh basil, and garlic or the Salvador Dali topped with roasted chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh pesto, and tomato sauce.
The restaurant also encourages your hand at building a pie with a robust list of toppings that guests can choose from, like artichoke hearts, broccoli, feta cheese, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, clams, spicy calabrese sausage, and many more.
3498 Cesar Chavez, San Francisco, CA 94110
Rick Richman is the founder of Firepie and prides himself on delicious, fast, wood-fired pizza – so quick, in fact, it takes less than two minutes for Richman and his crew to cook your pizza!
The Firepie slogan is “pizza on demand” and, boy, do they deliver! I’ve never received a pizza so quickly.
The menu has three staple pies – pepperoni, cheese, and mushroom. Sometimes Firepie will add specialty pies like chorizo, and always Firepie is willing to make your pizza vegan.
I was happy to take up the restaurant’s offer of a super fresh side salad with arugula and tomato to pair with my pizza.
Uncle Vito’s Pizza
700 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94108
Uncle Vito’s Pizza is made from unbleached flour dough and topped with fresh and sustainable ingredients. People can order a small, medium, or large pie and receive the benefit of free delivery.
Try the Red Eye with pepperoni, red onion, and roasted red peppers, the Pizza Bianco with Canadian bacon, mushrooms, and feta cheese, or the The Mountain which is basically a supreme pizza.
While the list of specialties is extensive, guests can also build their own from a long toppings list that includes but is not limited to salami, pineapple, anchovy, ground beef, roasted red pepper, and broccoli. It was a great treat having the opportunity to build my pizza with so many options!
The pizza scene in San Francisco is varied and robust; from Detroit to New York to Chicago, all types of pizzas are represented within the city. Traveling and trying new foods is my passion, and the pizzerias in the Bay Area did not disappoint.
Finding a local neighborhood joint to grab a slice and perhaps a local beer is easy, especially in the Mission District, where many of these restaurants are located.
