Since opening their first location in 1977, Niko Niko’s has been a beloved spot for Greek food in Houston.

Now with multiple locations throughout the city, you’re never too far away from some of the best gyros in the world.

Don’t believe me? Niko Niko’s boasts awards from, among others, Zagat and Eater Houston and has even featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives!

You absolutely have to get the classic gyro sandwich. Slow-cooked and chopped lamb and beef, mixed with tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce inside a fresh pita, is what made Niko Niko’s. It’s still a jaw-dropper today!

Just GRK

11325 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079
Phone: 832-623-6048
Visit Website

Just GRK, located right off the Katy Freeway, offers fantastic Greek flavors in a fast-casual kind of setting.

The centerpiece of Just GRK is their open grill. It’s a concept that matches their Texas location perfectly.

For something traditional, try any of the grilled combo plates. You can get up to four kinds of meat skewers and sides, along with many different types of sauces.

For something a little different, though, try out the GRK Poutine. Hand-cut fries topped with feta cheese, green onions, grilled mushrooms, and a demi-glace marry the best of Canada and Greece. It’s a must-try!

Helen Greek Food & Wine

2429 Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005
Phone: 832-831-7133
Visit Website

If you’re in Rice Village, do yourself a favor and visit Helen Greek Food & Wine. This tavern has a very old-school kind of feel.

Helen has an impressive list of Hellenic wines and specializes in both traditional and modern food presentations. Helen consistently ranks among the best Greek restaurants in Houston.

I almost always get the braised lamb shank. A colossal piece of perfectly-cooked lamb paired with trahana grits, cipollini onions, and baby carrots.

It’s a perfect hearty dinner dish. Are you looking for a good starter? The greens and cheese pie is listed as “spanakopita but better,” and it’s definitely that.

Zabak’s Mediterranean Cafe

5901 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77057
Phone: 713-977-7676
Visit Website

Sitting in the St. George Place part of Houston is Zabak’s Mediterranean Cafe. Zabak’s offers a super hip and casual setting as a backdrop to some very old-world Greek and Mediterranean flavors. This second-generation family-run spot is teeming with tradition.

Zabak’s signature dish is their falafel sandwich. Their secret falafel recipe is the key, giving diners an amazingly crisp and well-seasoned patty of chickpeas and parsley.

Put that in a pita with lettuce, tomatoes, tahini sauce, and just a touch of hot sauce, and you’re in heaven. If you somehow have room for dessert, the baklava is a classic.

La Fendee

1402 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006
Phone: 713-522-1505
Visit Website

For a whole Mediterranean experience, head to Montrose and visit La Fendee. La Fendee serves Mediterranean classics in a very comfortable environment.

If bringing your own drinks suits you, La Fendee offers that for diners. And if you want something a little extra, La Fendee even has a selection of hookah.

The hummus is a well-prepared rendition of a favorite. Tabouli salad with parsley, tomatoes, onions, and the famous cracked wheat is hearty and filling.

For an entree, get the kafta kabob. It’s two skewers of seasoned ground beef with a skewer of grilled veggies and tahini sauce. Straightforward and delicious!

Ouzo Bay

4444 Westheimer Rd Suite G130, Houston, TX 77027
Phone: 832-430-6610
Visit Website

Sometimes you want to visit an upscale dining spot, and Ouzo Bay, in the River Oaks District, is a perfect place for that.

Ouzo Bay offers modern dishes alongside an extensive wine and cocktail list. The dining room is elegant and a fantastic spot for a date or hanging out with friends.

Ouzo Bay also doubles as a fish market, so you know that the seafood dishes are all fantastic. The Aegean Bronzino, in particular, is a treat.

It’s caught in the wild then grilled to a very mild and sweet flavor. Pair that with the charred broccolini and crispy lemon herb potatoes.

Athena’s Greek & European Kitchen

13250 Farm to Market Rd 529, Houston, TX 77041
Phone: 832-328-5494
Visit Website

Athena’s Greek & European Kitchen sits right near Independence Square on Farm to Market Road. Athena’s serves up a wide array of fresh Mediterranean food in a comfortable, no-frills kind of setting.

Athena’s serves a fantastic pastitsio. If you’re not familiar with pastitsio, think about a Greek lasagna, and you’re on track.

An herbal tomato and meat sauce and pasta sit under a creamy bechamel sauce, and then the whole thing bakes to perfection.

I also get a side salad with a briami (a Greek ratatouille), then I’m set for the night. Finally, get the baklava or tiramisu for a memorable dessert!

Kenz Mediterranean Cuisine

5000 Westheimer Rd #602a, Houston, TX 77056
Phone: 832-991-8988
Visit Website

If you’re ever Uptown at the Centre at Post Oak, get some lunch at Kenz Mediterranean Cuisine. Kenz offers a menu focused on halal cuisine, so think fresh proteins and veggies.

The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed, plus you can get Egyptian tea, a rarity in the Houston area.

I always get The Alexander when I visit Kenz. You get your choice of protein served with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and feta cheese, all in a warm thick Greek pita.

If you want something a little lighter, The Nile is a salad bowl with mainly the same ingredients served over fresh greens.

Ekko’s Greek American Deli

5216 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX 77056
Phone: 713-622-2625
Visit Website

When you think great food, you probably aren’t thinking “gas station.” But, Ekko’s Greek American Deli, located inside a gas station on Richmond Avenue, is absolutely the exception to the rule. Classics like gyros, souvlaki, hummus, and baklava are the fare at this cozy cafe.

At Ekko’s, you’ll definitely want to get the gyro. Lamb, onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce on a pita? Perfection. And when served along with a side of fries, it’s even better.

If lamb’s not your thing, Ekko’s offers a chicken option as well. Ekko’s hummus and pita is a great starter or on-the-go dish.

Yannis Greek Taverna

13203 Jones Rd, Houston, TX 77070
Phone: 832-478-9155

I love old-school spots, which is just one of the reasons I enjoy Yannis Greek Taverna. Nestled in the middle of the Cy Fair Plaza Shopping Center, Yannis offers the classics, and they’re done fast and done well.

The appetizers at Yannis are exceptional, with the baba ghanoush (roasted eggplant blended with olive oil and garlic) and keftedes meatballs being particular standouts.

I also recommend the Greek burger. An enormous beef patty is the star and covered with grilled onions, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce on a kaiser bun. It’s a great twist on the gyro!

Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine

912 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006
Phone: 713-942-2321
Visit Website

Aladdin Mediterranean Cuisine is a Houston institution and has been serving up great food since 2006. With a location in Montrose and another in Garden Oaks, a fantastic meal at Aladdin is never too far away!

Aladdin’s specialties are combo platters and family sides. They’re great ways to try a lot of delicacies in a single meal.

I love to get a couple of the meat kabobs and then supplement them with a tabouli salad, as well as a pomegranate eggplant.

Get an order of stuffed grape leaves or falafel for the table, and you’re in business. Bring your appetite for sure.

LuLu’s Mediterranean

5 Greenway Plaza c620, Houston, TX 77046
Phone: 281-827-3287

LuLu’s Mediterranean sits in Greenway Plaza. It’s a counter spot where you can get outstanding Mediterranean cuisine fast.

The ambiance is pretty straightforward, but that just means that you can focus on the flavors. That’s a good thing at LuLu’s.

Vegetarians will love the sampler, which comes with all of the following: Greek salad, hummus, baba ghanoush, domas, falafel, cauliflower, and pita bread. It’s a meal!

I also recommend getting the chicken shawarma sandwich. It’s a slow-cooked and savory treat. Rather than fries, I opt for the couscous with veggies for a side. Everything on the menu is excellent here!

Harry’s Restaurant

318 Tuam St, Houston, TX 77006
Phone: 713-528-0198
Visit Website

In the Midtown section of Houston, Harry’s Restaurant is a little bit different from many of our featured restaurants in that its’ focus is on breakfast and lunch.

And with more than 70 years of experience, trust that Harry’s is serving up some of the best breakfast in all of Houston.

Pancakes are the big star at Harry’s. They’re giant, fluffy, and delicious. I also like to get the chicken and biscuits.

Two fresh buttermilk biscuits (grilled if you want!) come with two perfectly-fried chicken thighs glazed with hot honey. It’s a perfect start to any weekend.

Simply Greek

1900 Blalock Rd, Houston, TX 77080
Visit Website

Simply Greek, with several locations in and around Houston, is anything but simple. They offer gyros and Greek specialties, but also specialty hot dogs, burgers, and New York-style pizza in a casual setting. So no matter what savory treat you’re craving, you’ll find a great version at Simply Greek.

Want a twist on a Greek Gyro? Get the Loki. It’s a 100% beef hot dog cooked to perfection and topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, feta cheese, and Tzatziki sauce.

In the mood for something vegetarian? The pita fried zucchini comes with gyro fillings and fried zucchini. Give it a shot!

Mediterranean Grill House

808 Travis St #65, Houston, TX 77002
Phone: 713-571-6800

Our last stop is at the Mediterranean Grill House. This food court eatery in the Niels Esperson Building gives a straightforward menu of Greek favorites. Mediterranean Grill House is an excellent option if you’re in a rush.

I especially enjoy the falafel pita sandwich. It’s crispy, hot, and always a hit. If I’m feeling a little indulgent, I get a plate of the stuffed grape leaves as well.

For more of a sampler, get any of the plates! You have many protein options, and you can try any of the sides. Mix and match until you find what suits you.
