Even looking at the Holy Donut website will leave you drooling. Now, these aren’t your typical donuts. These donuts are made with potatoes. This family-owned business started small and eventually opened its shop and expanded to multiple locations. They have earned this top spot of the best donut shops in America.

The Holy Donut makes its donuts with high-quality ingredients. Most of their ingredients are locally produced and they use no fake dyes in their products. 

I specifically love the Toasted Coconut With Coconut Milk Glaze. Its sweet and texture-filled flavor is truly something special. Some of my other recommendations include the Maple Bacon donut, Coffee Cake donut. If you’re in the mood for something chocolatey, I recommend the Allen’s Coffee Brandy Dark Chocolate Maine Potato donut. 

This Maine located donut shop also offers gluten-free options to their customers. 

A Baker’s Wife

This popular pastry shop is located in Minneapolis. They offer a vast selection of products, including donuts, tortes, cookies, bars, toast, pastries, cupcakes, and cake. What else could you ask for? 

Their donut selection includes some classic favorites like Maple Long John, Maple Bacon Long John, Custard Filled Long John, Cake Donut, Icing and Sprinkle Donut, and Glazed Donut. The two main types of donuts they offer are cake donuts and raised donuts.

Federal Donuts is an award-winning shop. They are known for their less classic flavors but also offer customers some truly classic donut options. 

I love the Caramel Apple Cheesecake fancy donut. Pair it with a cup of Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and your mouth is going to be experiencing a plethora of flavors!

They are also famous for their double-fried chicken! When you stop by, make sure you come hungry. Federal Donuts has dinner and dessert. 

Union Square Donuts

Donuts and coffee, anyone? Union Square Donuts is in the Boston, Massachusetts area with a few different locations. Union Square makes their donuts with love and care in-shop daily for ultimate freshness. 

They have a passion for trying out new donut flavors and keeping their customers intrigued by what’s coming next. I tried a couple (okay, maybe more than a couple) of Union Square Donuts to see what all the hype was about. 

My personal favorites from this donut shop include the Sea Salt Whiskey Caramel, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Vegan Chai Apple Cider, Honey Glazed, and the Brown Butter Hazelnut crunch donuts. 

They also offer a nice variety of coffee to pair with your sweet treats, including classic drip, cold brew, and nitro cold brew iced coffees. 

Union Square Donuts also offers vegan options for their customers with special diets. 

The Heavenly Donut Company

The Heavenly Donut Company’s motto is “Life is better with donuts,” and I couldn’t agree more. For special events like weddings and parties, they offer a food truck option to cater events. Nothing better than donuts on the go! 

This husband-and-wife-owned business blossomed when two passionate individuals decided to open their own donut business. They are entrepreneur-minded individuals with a passion for pastries. 

This Alabama local favorite donut shop offers some amazing flavors. I love the French Toast Premium, the Red Velvet Topped, the Strawberry Iced, and Sausage donuts, as well as their beignets! 

You really can’t go wrong with what you order from the Heavenly Donut Company. Every item is a winner! 

District Doughnut and Coffee

District Doughnut and Coffee offer seasonal menus to keep their customers from getting bored (trust me, there’s no way you will!) 

Their fall menu includes sweet treats such as the Maple Butter Pecan donut, Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee donut, Pumpkin Creme Brulee donut, Blackberry Jam donut, Caramel Apple Streusel donut, Sweet Potato Pie donut, Samoa, and so much more! You can’t even begin to imagine the flavors this donut shop comes up with! 

Their in-house chef only uses prime ingredient selections to make sure that District Doughnuts stays high-quality and gourmet. They use top-notch chocolates, fresh fruit, and wholesome ingredients like eggs, milk, and real cream. 

These ingredients are what make District Donut and Coffee so incredibly delicious. 

Fox’s Donut Den

A thriving city in the food department, the next best donut shop in America is located in Nashville, Tennessee! Fox’s Donut Den is a local and tourist favorite for donuts. 

They put their unique style into each of their classic donuts, including the name. I checked out Fox’s Donut Den and have a few favorites (though it was challenging to choose just a few). 

I love the “Off” The Beaten Path Apple Fritter donut, The Overthinker, which is a sourdough donut, The Goldenboy, and the Sleeptalker Sausage Roll donut. This donut shop offers donuts as unique and bubbly as the city. 

Gourdough’s Big. Fat. Donuts.

Gourdough’s offers a full menu in addition to their mouth-watering donut menu. Check out their location and come with a hungry belly. 

They have menu items to include appetizers, soups, and salads, burgers, and sandwiches, to name a few things. 

Here’s what makes them one of a kind: Donut Sandwiches. Donut Burgers. You read right. Gourdough’s offers options as I’ve never seen before when it comes to what you can do with your donuts! Don’t limit dessert to after dinner when you can skip right to your dessert with your dinner!

Some of the best foods come from the south, and this donut shop is no exception! Revolution Donuts is a Georgia-based donut shop. 

I love the pure and high-quality ingredients used at Revolution donuts: everything is all-natural; there are no trans-fats; they use organic flour; they offer seasonal produce, vegan, and gluten-free options.

If you have time to stop in and stay for a while, you should check out their full coffee and espresso bar. In it, you can find their house-roasted cold brew, lemonades, brewed teas, chai, and homemade flavorings.

I’m absolutely in love with their Vanilla Bean, Raspberry Sprinkle, Orange Pistachio, Gingerbread Cake, Caramel Bacon, and Buttermilk Bar donuts.

Donut Bar offers gourmet donuts in California. They offer a donut and drink menu, along with their cool merchandise for purchase to rep the shop. 

I tried a few of their donuts. By far, my favorite is one of their specialty donuts, the Birthday Cake Oreo donut. However, their DB Nutella comes in a close second. 

If you’re looking for a delightful donut and coffee combo, Donut Bar has got you covered. They have drink options to include Dalgona coffee, Mexican Mocha, Cortado, Cappuccino, Americano, Latte, and classic drip coffee. 

You’ve got no shortage of options at the Donut (and coffee) Bar. 

Glam Doll Donuts

For the most aesthetically pleasing donut selection, check out Glam Doll Donuts. In Minneapolis, this is the spot to be for everybody with a sweet tooth. 

Glam Doll Donuts offers menu options, including donuts and coffees. Their unique appearance is just as impressive as their donut names. 

Some of my favorite donuts from Glam Doll are the Vanilla Darling Cake Donut, Violet BeauBeau, and Mocha Lisa.  

General Porpoise Doughnuts

Looking for amazing donuts in the Seattle area? General Porpoise is the spot! 

I tried a few of their donuts, and my top favorite flavors are the Lemon Curd, Chocolate Marshmallow, and Maple Cream. 

Though many of their delicious donuts are worth trying out! 

They also have more unique options, such as Italian Plum Jam and Tiramisu donuts. 

If you’re in the area, this donut shop also allows customers the option to rent out their facilities for events. They have unique areas for you and your friends to have an awesome time eating, drinking, and being merry!

General Porpoise Doughnuts offers coffee options for their customers as well. 

Blackbird Doughnuts

Blackbird Doughnuts has multiple locations in the Massachusetts area. In addition to their many locations, they also have a long list of donuts on their menu. 

Anytime you visit Blackbird, you can pick up one of your classic favorites. However, they also have seasonal menu items to look forward to! 

I LOVE these classics; Chocolate Old Fashioned, Vanilla Glaze, Chocolate Chip Doughnut Cookie, and The Blackbird.

Donut Alley is a California-based shop. Donut Alley’s current owners adopted it from longtime owners who created the business in the 1920s. These donuts are thoughtfully crafted after many years of hard work and establishing the perfect recipes.

Their menu includes Buttermilk, Old Fashioned, Cake, French Cruller, Malasada, Raised, and Specialty donuts, as well as Donut Holes. They even offer a foot-shaped donut for kids visiting. 

To pair with your donut, they offer organic coffee. 

My favorite donuts from Donut Alley are the Maple Donut Bar, Powdered Sugar Cake Donut, and Strawberry Donut. 

Hello Donuts + Coffee

A donut a day keeps the doctor away? That sounds like a good rule to us! Hello Donuts + Coffee is open seven days a week, so you can get your donut fix any day of the week! 

This donut shop offers different flavors on a weekly rotation schedule. I personally love their Black & White Cookie donut, Pumpkin Cheesecake donut, Cornbread Cake donut, and their Maple Pull-Apart donut. 

The best news? You don’t have to get your crafted coffee from any place else. This is a one-stop shop for deliciously made donuts and coffee. They have coffees including drip coffee, iced coffee, Americanos, Mochas, Lattes, Espresso, Cappuccino, Matcha Lattes, Chai Lattes, and more! 

Allie’s Donuts

Allie’s Donuts is based in Rhode Island but is 100% worth the trip! You will love the charming old-fashioned menu at Allie’s. It will give you all the feels of an old Mom and Pop donut shop. 

My personal favorites are the classic Powdered Sugar, Glazed Cruller, Maple Frosted, and Powdered Lemon. 

Allie’s Donuts menu is extensive, but they have many different options for any donut-lover. The most popular flavors are Allie’s Plain, Raised Ring, Raised Shell, and Solid Chocolate. 

Long’s Bakery

You can find Long’s Bakery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Where you’ll find some of the most delicious donuts you’ve ever tasted! They are a local favorite for sure! 

When I tried Long’s Bakery, I loved the Chocolate Creme as my top pick! The perfect consistency and texture all in one super sweet treat! 

Long’s Bakery doesn’t stop with donuts. They also offer a wide and sweet variety of other pastry options! They also have these marvelous pastries covered in cinnamon sugar with a creme filling that is to die for! Worth giving a try if you are ever in Indiana! 

Hugs & Donuts

There’s nothing like a warm hug… except for maybe a warm donut. 

Hugs & Donuts is a Texas-based donut shop with a lot of love to give. Their main menu items are donuts and kolaches. How much more delicious can you get? 

You have fun options for daring at heart, a surprise donut box. They pick your donuts; it is just your job to love them. They also have a menu item called the Giant Donut, a 10-inch donut for you to share with your friends (or keep to yourself, no judgment). 

Their donuts and kolache flavors are seasonal since Hugs & Donuts likes to keep it fresh and exciting all year round.

Hugs & Donuts also offers vegan and gluten-free options for their customers. 

New Palace Bakery

Based in Michigan, New Palace Bakery is a must-see donut shop. Why limit yourself to donuts when you can have any pie, cake, cookie, muffin, cupcake, or pastry you desire? New Palace Bakery has it all, and each item is delicious to the last bite! 

Their baked items don’t only taste amazing, they also have a lot of aesthetic appeal. When you walk into New Palace Bakery, it looks like you’ve stepped into the Willy Wonka of bakeries. 

When you visit, take a moment, look around, and wisely choose what pastry you’ll be consuming that day. You don’t want to miss out on this one with so many genuinely amazing options waiting for you inside! 

Knead Doughnuts

Okay, this one I already love because of the name, but I wanted to check it out and see if all of that charm went into their donuts…it does. 

Knead Doughnuts values hard work to make an amazing product. They take pride in creating something delicious for their customers, starting fresh each day. 

They have so many flavors, but my favorites by far have to be the Brioche, Vanilla Glazed, Passion Fruit, Brown Butter Pecan, and Maple Sea Salt donuts.

To make sure each customer can enjoy their delicious donuts, they offer vegan and flour-free options. 

GBD (Golden Brown Delicious)

GBD is serving up donuts in the south! Based in Greenville, South Carolina, this donut shop is worth stopping by on your next summer road trip. 

GBD is more known for being an amazing family restaurant. For them, donuts are just an extra! Go check out their selections of burgers, salads, pizza, and many other entrees. They even have an entree called the Krabby Patty.

You can get a single dinner ticket and have an all-inclusive meal. More good news! If you love wine, this is the place to go. Where else will they serve you a full dinner of southern cooking, donuts, and wine? 

Top Pot Doughnuts

A donut shop that highly values integrity and brings that into its business and its food. Top Pot has been around for decades, and they know how to do donuts right! 

They offer a healthy selection of both year-round and seasonal donuts. When I visited, I loved the Raspberry and Lemon Glaze fancy, Cookies and Cream fancy, Peppermint Snowdrift, Orange Marmalade cake, Chai Glazed Old Fashioned cake, and the Samoa donuts. 

While visiting, you might as well stop and have a cup of coffee to pair with your donut, right? They roast all of the coffee in small batches to give customers the most flavor and boldness the blend will deliver. 

Doughnut Vault

Visiting the busy city of Chicago? Stop by the Doughnut Vault! They’ve got a wide donut variety and quite a few cold brews and hot coffee options too! 

They offer a daily special donut to the customers that rotate each day. When I visited, the special was the Blackberry Jelly donut, and, for your sake, I hope that it’s the special when you visit too! 

Also included on my list of favorites from this amazing donut shop are their Chocolate, Pistachio, Almond, and Lemon Poppy Seed donuts. 

They offer two main varieties of donuts at Doughnut Vault: old-fashioned donuts and yeast donuts. Both are delicious. I suggest trying one of each. I also got a 16 oz Project X Cold Brew, their in-house brew. 

Gibson’s Donuts

This donut shop is in Memphis, Tennessee. As much as it is a tourist hot spot, it’s also a shop for families to enjoy delicious treats together. 

They offer many mouth-watering classics and also provide customers with cute decorated seasonal options for holidays. It’s something both children and adults will love and appreciate. 

When you visit their page, you can tell that they value family and strive to make Gibson’s Donuts a place for friends and families to gather for something great. 

There are so many delicious donuts that I had a hard time choosing a favorite. My advice? Pick anything. You literally can’t go wrong! 

Beiler’s Doughnuts

Beiler’s has been making donuts for over thirty years. They are a proud Amish bakery located in Philadelphia. 

Along with their unique story, this donut shop offers some unique flavors. I took a look at their menu and was instantly wowed. 

Some of their special flavors I particularly enjoyed are the Banana Creme, Caramel Cake, Chocolate Mousse, and Dutch Crumb. The list goes on. 

It’s no surprise that this donut company offers after-hours special event options. They have a huge emphasis on family values. Bring Beiler’s Donuts to your next large celebration and let your guests experience all the flavor and goodness of Beiler’s. 

The Donut Whole

If you like a little flair in your donut selection, The Donut Whole is the shop you need to try. Before even visiting, you can take a look at their page and see the rainbow of colors that are their donuts. The best part? The taste checks out too! 

I tried their Fruity Pebbles, Strawberry Coconut, and Maple Bacon donuts. I vote all of them a ten out of ten for sure! 

I also enjoyed viewing their selection of holiday-themed donuts for every major calendar holiday. If there is something to celebrate, The Donut Whole is going to do it! 

Dizzy Dean’s Donuts

This donut shop is in Oregon, and it is a one-stop breakfast spot for all baked goods. 

They offer amazing breakfast options like Biscuits and Gravy (my personal choice). Their donut selection is also top-notch. 

My top picks are the Devil’s Food, Mango Filled Donuts, and Cinnamon Sugar Twists.  

If you’re a local or frequent the area, Dizzy Dean’s also provides a rewards points program for their valued customers. You can accumulate points towards earning free items in-store at every purchase! 

Mojo Donuts

Mojo Donuts is a Florida-based donut shop. What is better than coming in from the hot summer sun and getting a sweet donut? Nothing I can think of! 

In case that wasn’t enough to satisfy you, Mojo donuts is also a fried chicken shop. Yep, the two best foods combined all in one spot. 

If you don’t want to take my word for it, Mojo Donuts is an award-winning donut shop and appeared on Guy Fieri’s television show. 

Their donuts have rich, creamy fillings and toppings dusted with delicious toppings such as oreo, chocolate chips, sprinkles, fresh fruit, and more! They even have donut selections with candy toppings and cereal toppings. 

At Mojo, you can tell that each donut is a piece of art both in aesthetics and taste! 

Do-Rite Donuts

Another all-in-one eatery, Do-Rite is everything from your donut diner dreams! 

Their Maple Bacon donut is an absolute hit every visit. However, their breakfast and lunch menu is worth checking out as well. You can also make a donut sandwich from any of your favorite menu items!

Firecakes has a cute family story background where the business was born. It all started in the 1930s with a baker trying to feed groups of workers. Those recipes have survived all of these years and are living on in Firecakes bakery. 

Firecakes offers donuts as well as homemade ice cream. Such a dynamic duo! 

Some of my favorite menu donuts from Firecakes are the Wildflower Honey-Glazed, Valrhona Chocolate Iced, Tahitian Vanilla Iced, and Pistachio Old Fashioned. 

Firecakes also offers vegan options for customers with dietary restrictions. 

Sidecar Doughnuts & Coffee

Sidecar prizes itself on “creating the world’s freshest doughnuts”. They mention that they only want to use high-quality ingredients that meet their standards. 

They make their products in small batch sizes to ensure that each product has an equal amount of love, care, and flavor. 

Sidecar Doughnuts’ recipes were developed through community taste-testing, which I think is a great idea. 

My favorite flavored items from Sidecar Doughnuts & Bakery are the Butter & Salt, Saigon Cinnamon Crumb, and Huckleberry. 

Final Thoughts 

With so many excellent shops to try spread out through America, I think the best advice is to try a new shop everywhere you travel. There are hundreds of flavors to explore, and none of them disappoint from these donut shops.

The best donuts I have ever tried were from these 31 donut shops. Each of them has something unique and delicious to offer their customers. I love the backstory that many of these shops have, with humble beginnings. I also love the modern-up-and-coming entrepreneurial start-ups just the same. 

 While everybody has different tastes, everybody loves the taste of these best donuts in America.
